Kashmir Valley Gears Up For Ramadan

Ramadan, which is aimed at promoting peace has the devout Muslims fasting and spending more time in prayer. During Ramadan, Muslims pray for forgiveness for sin done in the past, seek divine guidance and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds.
"In this holy month of Ramadan, I will pray for all troubles in the valley to end. May god bestow peace and harmony on our valley. I hope that all my prayers are heard," says, a local resident of the valley.
Kashmiri Muslims start the preparation for the month of Ramadan at least ten-days in advance buying food and decorative items for the occasion. "We have to store extra food for Ramadan as it gets very busy during the fasting months, so we buy lots of dates, semolina, and meat in advance," said Abdul Rehman, a local resident a day ahead of Ramadan.
Kashmir, which for years now has been harassed both politically and economically, has been a centre of violence and injustice. For many of the residents here, Ramadan brings with it a few days of peace that every heart in the valley has been yearning from time bygone.
A local resident says that it is a belief that observing fasts during this month cleanses the soul and spreads peace, prosperity and happiness.
While, Ghulam Jeelani says "This is not just a month of fasting and offering prayers but also the month of distributing alms to the needy. We also donate some percentage of our income to the poor. It is a belief that the God rewards us for performing this activity. We should follow the duty of giving alms to the poor whole year and not only in the month Ramadan," said.
The activity during Ramadan peaks between 'Iftar', the breaking of the fast at sunset, a 'suhur' the last meal of the day before sunrise.
