The top French Honor has been bestowed on JK Rowling. The author of the Harry Potter series was given the prestigious Legion of Honour.

French President Nicholas Sarkozy knighted the 43-year old writer in the ceremony held at Elysee Palace, as reported by Scotman.

Rowling became a global sensation after writing the first of her Harry Potter series, 'Philosopher's Stone'. She soon went on to amuse the readers with her seven series stories about the boy wizard. Her books sold over 400 million copies and was translated in to 67 languages including French.

The Legion d'honneur is France's elite national merit society and was created in the 19th century by Napoleon Bonaparte. AGENCIES
