The Indian Wine Industry Is Booming

By Staff

Wine
Wine is beginning to flow as easily as conversation in trend-setting middle class households across the country. As a growing number within the jet set are becoming conscious of the adverse health consequences of hard alcohol, there's been a phenomenal growth in the wine making industry in the past five years.

The wine industry in India is projected to grow at more than 25 per cent annually in the next decade, making it the fastest growing industry in the country. Analysts say the double-digit growth in the segment is partly being fuelled by the tech boom. In fact, young, upwardly mobile techies who are exposed to the Western lifestyle are taking to wine in a big way.

The quantum jump from two million litres of wine from four wineries in Maharashtra in 2001 to 13 million liters in 2007 from 51 wineries says it all. And it has set the trend for a phenomenal growth of the infant industry. According to estimates, per capita consumption of wine in India is about 4.5 ml per year.
