Kiran Bedi Seeks VRS
Supercop Kiran Bedi has sought Voluntary Retirement from Service and the Home Ministry is "processing her request".
"The ministry has received the request for VRS from Ms Bedi and it is being processed," a Home Ministry spokesman said here today.
He refused to comment whether Ms Bedi had sought VRS on being denied the top slot in Delhi Police a couple of months ago.
Ms Bedi, who heads the Bureau of Police Research and Development, had put in her resignation about ten days ago. She is currently serving a 90 days notice period.
Ms Bedi, who was the first woman IPS officer of the country, has decided to quit the police force after 35 years.
Though officially it has been said that Ms Bedi resigned so that she could devote more time to her social service, speculations are rife that she decided to quit following the government neglecting her claim for the post of Delhi Police Commissioner two months back.
Despite being the most senior police officials, Ms Bedi's claim for the top post was overlooked and YS Dadhwal was made police commissioner.
Protesting this, Ms Bedi had gone on leave at that time. However, later after a meeting with Home Minister Shivraj Patil she rejoined her duties.
Ms Bedi has handled important assignments, including being Police Chief at Tihar Jail and initiating prisoners reforms process there. She had also served United Nation's assignment and headed the police force of Mizoram.
