Senior citizens allowed free travel in city buses
New Delhi, Oct 5 (UNI) Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today announced that senior citizen will be allowed free travel in city buses and provided free medical treatment in Delhi government hospitals.
''The Government would set up recreation centres for the elders in all 70 Assembly Segments... senior citizens have been facing loneliness after fragmentation of the concept of joint families in the community,'' Ms Dikshit said at a workshop organised by the Department of Social Welfare on International Elders' Day.
She expressed the hope that the Senior Citizen Council would be able to address all the problems faced by the elderly.
''The Department of Social Welfare has been granting pension to number of elders apart from providing Old Age Home facilities,'' she added.
All the departments under the Delhi Government have been instructed to give due respect to the visiting senior citizens in their offices, she said.
She appealed to senior citizens to keep a watch over the implementation of welfare schemes and render constructive cooperation in implementation of Government programmes.
The Government will expedite issue of identity cards to the senior citizens, she added.
