Vastu Shastra: Avoid Keeping These Things In Different Directions Of Your Home For Positive Energy
The way a home feels can often be influenced by how its spaces are arranged, organised and maintained. In Vastu Shastra, different directions are traditionally associated with specific energies, and the placement of certain objects is believed to influence the overall balance of a space.
A Vastu consultant shares insights into the things that are best avoided in each direction to help keep the home clean, organised and energetically balanced.
From clutter and broken objects to mirrors, water elements and heavy furniture, here is what traditional Vastu guidance recommends keeping away from different directions of the home.
North West: Avoid Clutter And Broken Items
The north-west direction is traditionally associated with movement and change. Avoid keeping old or broken items, extra furniture, heavy electronics and excessive storage in this area.
Clutter should also be minimised, while divorce-related photographs or symbols are best avoided here. Keeping this zone relatively open and organised is traditionally believed to support a lighter atmosphere.
North: Keep The Space Light And Unblocked
The north is traditionally considered an important direction for opportunities and prosperity. Vastu recommends avoiding heavy objects, dark colours, clutter and junk in this area.
Large storage cabinets should also be avoided where possible. Blocked windows are another thing to watch out for, as keeping openings clear can make the space feel brighter, more open and better ventilated.
North East: Avoid Heavy And Fire-Related Elements
The north-east is traditionally regarded as a particularly significant zone in Vastu. The consultant recommends avoiding a toilet or bathroom, kitchen, heavy furniture and additional storage in this direction.
Electronic devices are also included in the list of things to avoid. Keeping this area uncluttered and relatively open is a common Vastu recommendation.
East: Say No To Broken And Unused Things
The east is associated with the rising sun and is traditionally linked with vitality and new beginnings. Avoid heavy storage, old or useless objects and broken things in this direction.
Dark curtains and excessive electronic gadgets are also best avoided. Keeping the area bright, clean and free from unnecessary objects can make it feel more welcoming.
South East: Avoid Water Elements And Waste
The south-east is traditionally connected with the fire element in Vastu. Therefore, water elements are generally advised against in this direction.
Avoid heavy storage, old newspapers or magazines, broken items and dustbins here. Regular cleaning and removing accumulated waste can help keep the space neat and functional.
South: Keep Away Water And Negative Imagery
The south is another direction where Vastu recommends being mindful of what is placed around the space. Water elements, overhead beams, clutter and junk are among the things to avoid.
Broken objects should also be removed. Avoid keeping pictures depicting sadness or fear in this direction, favouring imagery that creates a more positive visual atmosphere instead.
South West: Avoid Mirrors, Glass And Openly Kept Money
The south-west is traditionally considered a direction associated with stability. Water elements, mirrors and excessive glass items should be avoided here.
Avoid very light colours in this zone and keeping money openly visible, instead storing valuables in a secure and organised manner.
West: Remove Expired And Unused Items
The west direction also calls for attention to cleanliness and storage. Avoid expired food, empty containers, broken objects and unused items in this area.
Fire elements are also included among the things to avoid. Regularly checking cupboards, shelves and storage spaces can help prevent unnecessary objects from accumulating.
A Cleaner Home Can Feel More Positive
Whether or not one follows Vastu principles, many of these recommendations encourage habits that can make a home feel more comfortable: removing broken objects, clearing clutter, keeping windows unobstructed and avoiding the accumulation of things that are no longer useful.
For those who follow Vastu, these practices are also traditionally believed to help maintain balance and positive energy within the home. The simple principle is to keep spaces light, clean, organised and free of unnecessary clutter, creating an environment that feels more energetic, peaceful and inviting.
