Dogs are the most lovable pets to have. Even if they are not pets, dogs can be very friendly sometimes. They are honest, fun and helpful. But dogs are very sensitive to injuries. They cannot be treated harsh if injured.
Their injuries could be due to any accident, fight with some other dog or any infection. It can happen that you might not know the exact way to treat the injury of a dog. If you own your own dog, you must learn the first aid for a dog and should be prepared for the same.
There are specific tips and steps to treat an injury, especially for dogs. The step wise guidelines to help an injured dog are as follows:-
Approach – A dog is filled with fear and trauma when injured. The dog is frightened because of the hurt and pain. In this situation, if you approach the dog in haste and panic, the dog would either retreat violently or get scared and run away. For this reason, always keep a mild and calm approach to an injured dog. Let the dog feel safe around you. This is the firt important step to treat or help any injured dog.
Observe – Do not directly touch the Dog or the injury as soon as you approach the dog. Observe the expressions and movements of the Dog before taking any further step. If the Dog is growling or barking, do not pet the dog. The dog might just bite you in fear and panic. Also examine the wound carefully. The depth and the seriousness of the injury should be observed first.
Tie the Dog – The next crucial step is to tie the dog to a fence post, tree or any pole. This would help you to protect yourself and keep the dog calm. Use a rope, cloth or any chain to tie the dog to the pole. Do not touch the wound before doing this step. The injury might cause more pain after being touched or examined. This could make the dog furious and could harm you or run away. This step is to avoid such situations.
First Aid – Now when the dog is completely friendly to you and is calmed down, make the do sleep in such a way that the wound is exposed to you. Now slowly use Hydrogen Peroxide in cotton and clean the wound carefully. While doing this hold the dog firmly. It would be better if you have some assistance for this step. You can also use any antiseptic liquid for cleaning the wound.
Band Aid – After cleaning the wound, you will understand how serious it is. If it is very deep, take help of a vet. If it can be healed on its own. Use dressing pads and cotton to cover the wound. Covering the wound is important as it would prevent any other infection to develop.
These are a few step wise procedures that can be used for the basic treatment og any injury. Do not attempt this on a street dog if you have no experience before.
