By Staff

Pomeranians, the tiny, fluffy dogs with a wedge-shaped head and pointed erect ears have a been a great fantasy to many people young and old through decades. History states that Michelangelo had a Pom who would sit and watch him paint the Sistine Chapel. Sir Isaac Newton had a Pom who once upset a candle on his important papers, which contained more than 20 years of research. The Hotel Heiress, Paris Hilton has two Poms named Prince and Kimchi, who accompany her in one or other important events. Well! They are sweet and friendly with a bit of pranks to add spice to your dazed life. If you are planning to own them, here are some things that you must know.

Temperament:

The lively little Pomeranian is very intelligent, with eager to learn attitude. They are loyal to its owner and the family. Willful, bold and sometimes temperamental, they make excellent guard dogs and will sound a bark when they sense

any kind of danger. Poms have a delightful nature and usually do not cling to their handlers. They are good at learning tricks. Make sure not to pamper it too much as this breed may become too demanding if the owner allows it. It is a good companion for an elderly person, but not for over attentive kids. Most of them are picky eaters. They get along well with other household pets if given a slow and proper introduction.

Health Care:

Poms can live upto 12- 19 years. Research states that some healthy Poms can live past 20 years of age or more. Poms should and must receive excellent dental care as they are prone to tooth loss. So make sure to clean it regularly. Dry food is recommended to aid in keeping teeth and gums healthy.

The most common health problems in Pomeranians are dislocated patella (knee-cap), slipped stifle, heart and skin problems and eye infections. Small females often need cesarean section deliveries. When the dog is old it may become molted with bald spots. Dry eye, tear duct disorders and cataracts that can appear in young adulthood and often lead to blindness are also common

Activity:

Poms should be taken for a daily walk, as the one who does not get it, are more likely to display behavior problems. Play will take care of a lot of their exercise needs; however, it may not be the fact with all the other breeds.

Living conditions:

One can have Poms as their pets, even if they are living in apartments, as they are very active even indoors and can live without a yard. To avoid overheating keep the dog quiet in hot weather

Grooming:

The Pom's very long, double coat should be brushed daily or twice weekly as brushing against the hair weekly is essential to keep the thick, plush coat, which sheds seasonally, free of mats. Brushing also helps to prevent dry skin and dandruff. Clean the eyes, nails and ears regularly. Dry shampoo them only when necessary. Avoid bathing Pomeranians too frequently as excessive bathing can damage their skin and coat by removing essential oils.
