As we look ahead into 2026, lighting design has gone from being simply about sight visibility to being about how a space feels. Whether you are talking about residential homes or the design of a hotel space, the use of lighting has become a crucial part of the design itself. The emerging trends point clearly toward warmer tones, thoughtfully layered illumination, and intelligent smart systems that work together to create spaces that feel inviting, elegant, and lived-in.

We spoke to Sunil Rathi, Founder and CEO, Halomax Lighting, who listed some of the lighting trends for 2026.

1. Warm Lighting Takes Centre Stage

"One of the most noticeable shifts in 2026 is the move toward warmer colour temperatures. Instead of cool, clinical white light, designers are embracing 3000K and even 2700K lighting," said Rathi.

Warm lighting helps create:

A cosy, welcoming atmosphere
A sense of relaxation and emotional comfort
Interiors that appear richer, more vibrant, and visually pleasing

"In residences, warm lighting turns living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas into intimate and comfortable spaces. In commercial establishments like hotels, warm lighting raises the quality of the customer experience by making spaces feel luxurious and, at the same time, familiar. This is a key function in transforming functional spaces into memorable spaces," said Rathi.

2. Ambient Lighting for Mood and Comfort

Lighting in 2026 will be more about feeling rather than brightness level in a given space. There is a rise in the importance of ambient lighting in homes as well as hospitality spaces.

Rather than relying on a single overhead light, designers are layering different light sources to:

Soften harsh shadows
Highlight architectural features
Add depth and visual balance

"Indirect lighting, hidden lighting, and soft glows can create serene and inviting spaces, which are always comfortable, irrespective of the time of the day. This approach not only improves visual comfort but also elevates the overall character of an interior," added Rathi.

3. Minimalism with a Decorative Focus

Minimalism is evolving. Even though clean lines and simplicity are still considered essential, 2026 is more about lighting with personality.

Instead of removing decorative elements, designers are carefully incorporating:

Table and floor lamps
Pendant and hanging lights
Statement accent fixtures

"These elements are well-integrated within the minimal framework, but at the same time, they add warmth, texture, and visual appeal. This creates a well-balanced look that is simple and expressive, where the lighting serves both purposes: functional and decorative," said Rathi.

4. Smart Lighting Becomes the New Standard

Smart lighting is no longer considered a luxury. By 2026, it will have become an expected feature in modern homes and hospitality spaces.

Key smart lighting features include:

Individual control of each light
Smooth dimming and brightness adjustment
Control over light intensity and colour temperature
App-based control and automated lighting scenes
