Could The Wrong Plumber Cost You More?

By Touseef Hussain

When we need a plumber, it is usually for something serious. So should you worry about which plumber to use or is it as simple as picking a few numbers from the classifieds and going with the cheapest quote?

Could the wrong plumber cost you more in the long run? The answer to that question is a categorical yes! Engaging a plumber who follows the right plumbing practice, does an excellent job and charges reasonable prices is worth their weight in gold.

Could The Wrong Plumber Cost You More?

Take Care in Hiring
Selecting a plumber is a real problem for most people because we as consumers often have little to no knowledge about plumbing let alone be certified to carry out plumbing works ourselves. How are we to know what good plumbing work looks like and what bad plumbing work looks like? One of the only ways of ensuring that your plumbing is done on a high level of standard is to take more care in the hiring of your plumber.

Track Record
The best way of finding out about the track record of a plumber is to ask for referrals from friends and co-workers. Forget the classifieds! Many people are very happy to tell you about bad experiences they have had with plumbers. You may also get quite a few recommendations for good plumbers. This is the best way of hiring the new plumber because the situation is not muddied by advertising or propaganda of the plumbing company. It is also a good way of avoiding a bad experience with a plumber.

Positive Spin
You can always look online for reviews about your local plumbers. If you are lucky enough to find some online reviews about plumbing companies in your area, you should disregard the positive reviews and concentrate on the negative ones. The positive reviews cannot be trusted because they may have been written by the plumbing company themselves.

One-Off Issues or Systemic Problems
Furthermore, don't forget the old wisdom, which claims that bad news is real news, and good news is advertising. Take a look at the negative reviews. You should look for problems that seem to be ingrained within the company. Look for problems that stem from poor management, poor time keeping or a lack of professionalism. Sometimes, people have a bad experience that is a one-off. You must identify these one-offs because they may serve as positive indicators for the company you should hire. For example, if the problem was that the staff were rude, then that is an issue ingrained within the company. If the problem was that a spare part took a few days to arrive, then that is more of a one-off.

Less Is Not Always More
Plumbing is an important area of the home's infrastructure and if it goes bad, it can become a costly affair. Also, plumbing code breaches are not something you want to be facing either, so rather than thinking that a plumber that costs less is best, think about how experience and long standing business pays.

Admittedly, not all plumbers who charge more are better, but you can be sure that a plumber who is always busy and takes a little longer to get hold of is probably the one to trust as they're busy being trusted by members of your community already.

However, most of the plumbing companies in India do not have a website, and most of them do not have an online presence.

Lastly, follow your instincts, if your first contact with the plumber leaves you feeling unsure and wary, then tell them you're seeking further quotes and move on until you find a business you're more comfortable dealing with. If you do that, you're more likely to enjoy long term gains for your home plumbing system and your bank balance.
