The thick layer of smog around us isn't just making it hard for us to breathe and see, it's also taking a toll on our mental and physical health. The brain's functioning can be severely impacted by pollutants present in smog, can adversely affect mood and cognitive functions.
A recent study also looked at potential impacts of pollution on childrens and adolescents who are more vulnerable as they are going through crucial periods of brain development. The research found evidences that air pollution is linked with an increased risk of depression and suicidal behaviour.
Here are a few ways to protect your mental health.
Limit Outdoor Exposure
Check the Air Quality Index when you are going out, on days when AQI is higher avoid going out at all. Always wear a mask before stepping out.
Eat anti-pollution diet
Foods like ginger, black pepper, jaggery and citrus fruits have antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that can help you to protect yourself from pollutants in the air by boosting your immunity.
Meditate
Meditation will make you more peaceful and calm, it can be proven really helpful for your emotional well-being and overall health. It is very helpful to relax and cope up with stress.
Anger management techniques
Anger management techniques are very helpful in managing your emotions. Try diaphragmatic breathing along with some meditation or journal your thoughts.
Yoga
Yoga is a great way to relax your nerves and is very effective to treat anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders.
It is advisable to enhance indoor air quality, reducing outdoor exposure and getting professional help in case you are experiencing mood disturbances.
