Panthenol: The Underrated Multitasking Hero Your Haircare Routine Is Missing
Ask anyone deep into haircare trends to name a hero ingredient, and keratin, hair oils and hydration serums come up almost instantly. Panthenol rarely makes the list - and that's the problem, because this Pro-Vitamin B5 derivative may be doing more heavy lifting than any of them.
It's a humectant, meaning it pulls moisture from the air and locks it into the hair shaft. It's a conditioning agent. New research even shows it physically bonds with hair's internal protein structure to reinforce strands from within. Despite all that, it rarely gets billed as the star ingredient it is.
We spoke to Ritu Vijayvergiya, Co-Founder, 2.Oh!, to understand why panthenol deserves a serious upgrade in reputation.
What is Panthenol?
"Panthenol is the alcohol form of Vitamin B5 and what scientists call a humectant, meaning it naturally attracts and holds onto moisture. Built into shampoos, leave-in conditioners and hairsprays, it works on more than one front at once - drawing water from the air into the hair shaft, then helping the fibre hold onto that moisture for longer," explained Vijayvergiya. It also lays down a thin conditioning film on the surface, which changes how hair responds to the daily wear and tear of brushing, styling, heat and humidity.
How Does It Work?
Imagine each hair strand as a complex, layered individual! From the outside, everything looks great, but so much could be going on inside. The outermost layer of this strand is the cuticle that protects everything inside.
"When this gets exposed to external elements like colouring, heat styling, UV, pollution, hard water, frequent washing or humidity changes, it takes all the blows, opening up and becoming rough. Several unhappy strands together create friction, leaving your hair feeling dry, tangled, frizzy and brittle. This is where Panthenol, the knight in shining armour, comes to the rescue," said Vijayvergiya.
Panthenol, The Saviour for Indian Hair
The pollution, heat and humidity in a tropical country like India are disastrous for the hair. Throughout the year, we need to protect our hair from any external damage, making Panthenol a must-have ingredient in the hair products we use. "Panthenol-infused products offer all the solutions to make our hair stronger, shinier, softer and easier to manage. Research even suggests that this ingredient can also interact with hair proteins through hydrogen bonding, making it more resilient to everyday mechanical stress," added Vijayvergiya.
For Indian hair especially, the balance that the lightweight ingredient creates is everything! It offers frizz control without killing the volume, it promises manageability without leaving your hair looking oily, and it hydrates like a pro!
So, the next time you're shopping for any hair products, check for Panthenol in the ingredients list before heading to the check-out counter and get home rest assured that your hair is in safe hands.
