From AC Rooms to Dust Exposure: Everyday Triggers for ENT Problems
Our modern lifestyle has made us used to living in air-conditioned spaces and enjoying the facilities provided by living in a city. Although these are convenient and comfortable, it is important to realize that these have become a source of daily triggers that affect our ear, nose, and throat (ENT) health. From staying in air-conditioned rooms to being surrounded by dust and pollution, these are not things that are usually considered but have a major bearing on our ENT health.
We spoke to Dr Pradip Uppal, Director and Consultant ENT, Jupiter Hospital, Thane, who explained these triggers and how to manage them.
The Hidden Impact of Air-Conditioned Spaces
The air-conditioned environments, especially if not well maintained, can have dry and contaminated air. "This dryness affects the nasal passages and throat, reducing their natural moisture and making them more vulnerable to irritation and infections. Many individuals experience symptoms such as a dry throat, nasal congestion, or frequent sneezing after long hours in AC environments," explained Dr Uppal. This can further lead to diseases such as sinusitis, which results in headaches, pain in the face, and respiratory problems due to the blockage of the sinus passage.
Dust Exposure: A Constant Urban Irritant
On the other hand, dust exposure, a common phenomenon in urban areas, construction areas, or even at homes, acts as a major irritant. "Dust particles often carry allergens, bacteria, and pollutants that can trigger allergic reactions. This may result in conditions like Allergic rhinitis, characterisedd by sneezing, a runny nose, itchy eyes, and nasal blockage. Continuous exposure without protection can worsen symptoms and reduce quality of life," said Dr Uppal.
Sudden Temperature Changes and Their Effects
Another overlooked factor is the sudden change in temperature, stepping out from the air-conditioned room into the hot and humid atmosphere. Such changes can affect the natural defence mechanisms of the body, making people vulnerable to infections like throat infections, cold, and ear discomfort.
Everyday Habits That Add to the Problem
"Furthermore, lifestyle behaviours like excessive usage of earphones, poor hydration levels, and poor indoor air quality also contribute to ENT problems. Lack of proper indoor air quality along with poor immunity may cause frequent throat problems or even vocal cord problems in professionals who use their voices extensively," added Dr Uppal.
Simple Preventive Measures That Help
Preventive measures can go a long way in maintaining ENT health. Here are some tips shared by Dr Uppal:
- Regular maintenance of air conditioners, using a humidifier, and proper ventilation can help in resolving issues related to indoor air.
- Using a mask in a dusty environment, personal hygiene, and drinking plenty of water are simple measures.
- Maintaining a healthy diet and boosting immunity are key to preventing ENT problems.
Bottomline
Dr Uppal concluded, "While we enjoy comfortable living, we also expose ourselves to unseen health hazards. Being sensitive to environmental factors such as AC, dust, and temperature fluctuations, and making small lifestyle adjustments can contribute significantly to avoiding chronic ENT disorders and maintaining a healthy lifestyle."
