Delhi Pollution: Expecting Mom, Beware! Smog Can Do Irreparable Damage If You Go Out In Delhi-NCR. Know How!
Unborn babies get nutrition and oxygen from their mother, everything the mother is eating, and drinking is simply transferred to the babies, even the toxic air. Smog is the biggest health threat that all pregnant women and their babies are facing.
Particle pollution poses serious threats to the health of all individuals, but it hit pregnant women and infants the hardest. It is the combination of toxic particles, solid and liquid that float around in the air.

When we are exposed to these particles they cause irritation in our eyes, nose, and lungs and make it hard for us to breathe. Once these particles are inhaled, they get trapped in our lungs and enter the bloodstream.
Effects of smog on maternal and fetal health :
Exposure of mothers and babies to smog and other environmental toxins can have adverse effects on their health.
Loss of pregnancy: Prolonged exposure to these toxins can cause spontaneous abortion, stillbirth and neonatal death.
Premature Birth: The buildup of toxins in the placenta can hinder the growth of the fetus, resulting in premature birth.
Low Birth Weight: Prenatal exposure to air pollutants during pregnancy increases the risk of low birth weight.
Pregnancy included hypertension (PIH) syndrome: Exposure to smog and air pollutants throughout the first two trimesters of pregnancy increased the risk of PIH syndrome.
Asthma: Asthma during pregnancy elevates blood pressure and decreases the function of the liver and kidney, it can cause your baby to suffer from a lack of oxygen.
It is impossible for you to completely eliminate or avoid pollution, however, you can take preventive measures to protect yourself and your baby on the pregnancy journey from the adverse effects of smog on our health.
How can you protect yourself from smog?
Here are some tips that you can use to create a safe environment for you and your baby where you can breathe freely.
Always check the Air Quality Index before stepping out of your home, it will give you an idea of the pollution level. If the pollution level is more than usual or above the safety level, it's advisable to stay indoors.
You should consider getting an air purifier, they usually consist of filters that will help you to remove smoke, mold, germs, and toxins from the air. You can also get plants for your home to filter the air naturally.
Keep yourself hydrated, drink plenty of water, juices, and herbal teas to support your gut health and nervous system. These herbal teas will also help you to build immunity and lower the effects of pollution on your body.
Consider staying on an antioxidant-rich diet, consuming fruits, leafy vegetables, nuts, and seeds will help you combat pollution. Wash your fruits and vegetables thoroughly as they can also be laced with harmful toxins by being exposed to pollution.
It is advisable to consult your doctor if you feel any type of uneasiness or irritation for a prolonged period.
