Drinking Adulterated Milk Daily? Doctors Explain What It Can Do to Your Gut, Kidneys and Hormones
Milk is often considered a staple of a healthy diet, especially in Indian households. Doctors, however, have warned that the regular consumption of adulterated milk has the potential to quietly destroy the body and can cause long-term health risks. Adulteration, often done to increase volume or shelf life, introduces harmful substances that the body is not designed to process.
We spoke to Dr Pooja Binnani, Consultant Nephrology, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, who explained how adulterated milk can harm the gut, kidneys, and hormones.
Impact on Gut Health
One of the first systems affected by adulterated milk is the digestive tract. Chemicals such as detergents, urea, starch, and synthetic milk agents can irritate the stomach lining. "This can lead to frequent acidity, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and even chronic gastritis over time. In children, whose digestive systems are more sensitive, this can interfere with nutrient absorption and weaken immunity. Prolonged exposure may also disturb the gut microbiome, which plays a key role in digestion, immunity, and mental well-being," explained Dr Binnani.
Strain on the Kidneys
The kidneys are responsible for filtering toxins from the blood. Adulterants, such as urea and synthetic chemicals, force the kidneys to work overtime. "Consumption can increase the risk of kidney inflammation, impaired filtration, and in severe cases, long-term kidney damage. People with existing kidney issues, diabetes, or high blood pressure are especially vulnerable, as their kidneys are already under stress," added Dr Binnani.
Hormonal Disruption
Another less known but alarming issue relates to hormonal imbalance. Adulterated milk can even contain some level of artificial hormones or chemicals similar to those found in natural hormones. "This can cause hormonal imbalance, which can influence growth in children, menstruation in women, fertility levels, and metabolism. Over time, hormonal imbalance can contribute to weight gain, fatigue, mood changes, and insulin resistance," said Dr Binnani.
Long-Term Health Risks
Daily exposure to adulterated milk doesn't always show immediate symptoms, which makes it more dangerous. "In fact, medical experts have emphasised that prolonged exposure to adulterated milk can cause liver stress, infections, and other inflammations. In some cases, it has also been correlated with cancer," warned Dr Binnani.
What Can Consumers Do?
Experts recommend buying milk only from authentic sources, checking for milk that is too thick or too white in color, and also being wary of milk that doesn't spoil naturally.
Bottomline
Dr Binnani concluded, "While milk can be nutritious, doctors stress that its quality matters as much as its quantity. Choosing safe, unadulterated milk is essential for protecting gut health, kidney function, and hormonal balance."
