Metallic Taste In Mouth: Causes
Bad breath is something none of us can stand. The main cause for bad breath is poor oral hygiene. However, there are various other causes too and when you develop that metallic taste or smell in your mouth, it is a reason to worry.
Studies show that 90 percent of the people experience this weird taste of old pennies in the mouth, which is why Boldsky has listed some of the reasons for this problem.
If you are under medications and witnessing this weird taste in the mouth, it is only because the body absorbs the medicine and it comes out in the saliva that tastes bitter.
However, if you are undergoing cancer treatment, this weird metallic taste is the result of chemotherapy.
But, if you continue to face this bad breath problem, it is wise to visit a dentist to check on your gums and oral health, as there could be something wrong.
And, if the problem still persists, getting the kidneys tested is a safe way to bring the problem to a conclusion. So, here are some of the possible reasons for that metallic taste in the mouth, why don't you take a look:
Poor Oral Hygiene:
When you ignore to floss and brush your teeth twice in the day, it could result to bad breath and in turn over a period of time, this could even turn into an infection called gingivitis, periodontitis and tooth infection. Getting yourself treated at the dentist will help the metallic taste in the mouth to disappear.
Drugs:
There are some drugs that have an adverse effect on the health and antibiotics such as tetracycline; the gout medicine allopurinol; lithium, which is used to treat certain psychiatric conditions; and some cardiac medications that have this side effect of bad breath. Drink a lot of water and juices to help treat that metallic taste in the mouth.
Side Effect Of Vitamins:
Vitamins are extremely good for the health, but some of the Multivitamins that contain heavy metals like copper, zinc or chromium tend to emit this metallic taste in the mouth over time. This taste begins to vanish when the body processes the vitamins or medicine.
Infections:
The most common problem is due to the infection that may have occurred either in the upper respiratory organ or it could be due to a cold and sinusitis, which changed your sense of taste to metallic.
Cancer Treatments:
If you are a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, you may experience a metallic taste in the mouth. This will eventually reduce, once the medication comes to an end.
Pregnancy:
During early pregnancy, some women find that their sense of taste changes into metallic or sour. This is not a problem to worry about. Change your diet, add a few fresh fruits and healthy vegetables to your diet and allow it to be a balanced one.
Dementia:
Did you know that our taste buds are connected by nerves to the brain? So, people who are suffering from dementia often have the problem of taste abnormalities.
Exposure To Chemicals:
If you are exposed to mercury or lead, inhaling high levels of these substances often can produce a metallic taste. This is another subtle reason why you develop that metallic taste in the mouth.
