Bone, Heart, and Hormones: Why Pistachios Are a Smart Snack for Women Over 40
The human body starts undergoing some changes as women enter their 40s and beyond. Hormones start changing, metabolism slows down, bones weaken, and heart problems are more likely. While these are all natural processes that occur as one ages, having a strong, active, and healthy lifestyle can be significantly affected by what one eats.
Making healthy dietary choices becomes even more crucial at this point in life. Pistachios are an easy and wise addition to the diet. Despite their diminutive size, they are nutrient-dense and can promote heart health, bone strength, and general hormonal balance. We spoke to Dr Divya Vora, American Pistachio Growers, who explained why this dry fruit is a smart snack for women over 40.
Supporting Bone Strength
"After 40, women naturally start losing some bone strength. This becomes more noticeable as they get closer to menopause. When oestrogen levels drop, bones can become thinner and weaker, increasing the risk of conditions like osteopenia and osteoporosis," explained Dr Vora.
The good news is that the right nutrition can help support bone health. Pistachios are a great example because they contain important nutrients that help keep bones strong:
- Calcium helps build and maintain strong bones.
- Magnesium helps the body absorb calcium and supports bone strength.
- Phosphorus works with calcium to make bones stronger.
- Vitamin K supports healthy bone function and metabolism.
A Heart-Healthy Choice
"Many women are at increased risk for heart issues after menopause. This occurs because the body's ability to accumulate fat and cholesterol can be impacted by hormonal fluctuations. Hence, maintaining heart health becomes even more crucial at this point in life," said Dr Vora.
Your diet may benefit from including pistachios because they are high in:
- Good fats (the ones that promote heart health)
- Fibre, which lowers cholesterol
- Plant sterols are recognised to promote heart health
Regular use of nuts has been shown to lower cholesterol. Specifically, pistachios may help increase HDL (good cholesterol) and decrease LDL (bad cholesterol).
Hormonal Balance
"Many women begin to notice changes beyond the age of forty, such as mood swings, low energy, restless nights, and sudden cravings. Eating wholesome foods can undoubtedly support your body during this phase, even though no single food can miraculously balance hormones," added Dr Vora. Pistachios include:
- Vitamin B6, which promotes hormone equilibrium and elevates mood
- Antioxidants that shield the body from stress and harm include lutein and polyphenols.
- Potassium aids in the regulation of normal blood pressure
How To Include Pistachios In Your Diet
It is easy to incorporate pistachios in your daily meals. There is no need for planning. Here are a few ideas for you:
- Add crushed pistachios in your yogurt and oatmeal for a healthier and crunchy meal.
- Sprinkle them on top of your salads to make them more tasty and filling.
- Blend a small handful into your smoothies for added flavour and protein.
- Or just enjoy a handful in the evening as a healthy snack instead of packaged or processed foods.
