40 Artisans, 15 Days, One Iconic Look: Roopi Gill Brings Punjab to Cannes 2026
While most of the Cannes 2026 red carpet has been dominated by European couture and floor-length gowns, one actress arrived with something entirely different in mind. Roopi Gill made a graceful appearance on the prestigious Cannes Film Festival red carpet, representing Punjabi cinema on the international stage while promoting her upcoming film Chardikala, set for theatrical release on May 29. She did not arrive in Valentino. She did not arrive in Dior. She arrived in Punjab.
And the internet has not stopped talking since.
The Look: Every Stitch Had a Story
For her Cannes 2026 appearance, Roopi stepped onto the red carpet in a custom ivory ensemble by Pitambara by Manisha. Instead of opting for a conventional gown, the actress embraced a traditional silhouette featuring an embroidered kurti paired with dhoti-style pyjama and layered dual dupattas.
The standout element of the look was a traditional phulkari-style ivory dupatta with a heavily ornate gold border, draped over her head in classic Punjabi fashion. But it was the details hidden within the embroidery that elevated the look from beautiful to meaningful.
The kurti featured crescent moon and lotus motifs - elements representing grace, strength, and purity. One of the intricate yet significant details was the word "Chardikala" embroidered in Gurmukhi on the sleeve, symbolising resilience and high spirits, perfectly tying into the theme of her upcoming film. One dupatta showcased wheat-inspired embroidery as a tribute to Punjab's farming roots and agricultural identity, while the second featured intricate chakra motifs.
This was not fashion. This was a manifesto.
The Jewellery: A Diljit Connection Hidden in the Details
Roopi completed her ensemble with layers of traditional jewellery crafted by Golecha's Jewels, the same jewellers behind Diljit Dosanjh's iconic Met Gala jewellery. Her accessories included a striking kundan necklace with an emerald centrepiece, statement earrings, traditional haathphool with a bird motif, a sleek silver kada, and stunning ivory juttis.
The connection to Diljit did not end at the jewels. It ran all the way through to the atelier that made the clothes.
The Designer: Pitambara by Manisha, and the Diljit Thread
Designer Manisha from Pitambara by Manisha shared that the custom look took over 15 days and 40 artisans to create. She said: "Last year, we executed Diljit's Met Gala look, and now we're bringing that same creative vision to Roopi Gill. Our main priority has always been to stay true to Punjab and its rich cultural heritage."
That Met Gala credit is not a small thing. Diljit Dosanjh's iconic Met Gala 2025 look was designed by Prabal Gurung, inspired by the Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh - and Pitambara by Manisha was brought in as a key collaborator for its deep understanding of Punjabi culture and heritage. Stylist Sohail Mughal revealed that when he finally told Manisha who they were working with, she responded in characteristic style: "Kar denge ji!" - and delivered.
From the Met Gala steps in New York to the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, Pitambara by Manisha has now dressed the two most talked-about Punjabi cultural moments on the international stage, back to back.
The Caption That Said It All
Roopi shared the moment on Instagram with the caption: "Punjab Di Mitti, Cannes De Carpet Te" - the soil of Punjab, on the carpet of Cannes.
Co-star Ammy Virk reposted the pictures, writing: "@roopilgill kya baat ae, feeling proud. Saadi film Cannes Film Festival te gyi ae." The pride was not just personal. It was collective.
Why It Matters
In a year when Cannes has seen its share of extraordinary fashion, Tara Sutaria in Vivienne Westwood, Alia Bhatt in ivory couture, Roopi Gill's look stood apart precisely because it refused to compete on those terms. There was no gown. No Western silhouette dressed up with an Indian accessory. Just a complete, considered, deeply intentional tribute to a culture, worn by a woman who knew exactly what she was doing.
Fans online called it a true representation of India on the global stage, comparing her appearance to Diljit Dosanjh's Met Gala debut and declaring: "This is how you represent India."
Punjab showed up at Cannes this year with pride, artistry, and culture stitched into every detail. Roopinder Gill's look wasn't just fashion. It was storytelling.
