What Is Viral ‘Morning Shed' Skincare Trend? Is It Simply Captivating To Try Or Does It Really Benefit Skin
The skincare industry has experienced a renaissance in the digital age, with consumers becoming more informed and engaged than ever before. The rise of social media has democratized beauty knowledge, allowing influencers, dermatologists, and enthusiasts to share tips, tricks, and routines with a global audience.
As a result, skincare trends can spread rapidly, capturing the collective imagination of millions. These trends often promise quick fixes, innovative solutions, or novel approaches to age-old skincare concerns, making them incredibly appealing.
Well, here is another one!

The latest viral skincare trend on TikTok isn't about applying products but rather removing them. "Morning shed," with 77 million views, involves using various skincare treatments before bed and then shedding them in the morning.
While some stick to a simple routine with a lip or face mask, others, like Kayla Lee Mills, go all out. They use eye masks, mouth tape, chin straps, overnight creams, bonnets, and more. This often results in a humorous or scary nighttime look. The goal is to wake up looking more refreshed than the day before.
Mixed Reactions From TikTok Users
The reactions to these videos are mixed. Some viewers are eager to try it themselves, while others find it excessive. One user confessed, "I'm too easily influenced. All of this is in my Amazon cart now." Another shared a less pleasant experience: "The jaw strap wasn't it for me. I woke up in the middle of the night and freaked out."
Comments on these videos range from enthusiastic to skeptical. One person joked, "Overconsumption is killing my people." Another user humorously noted in their video text, "POV: you almost died in your sleep." Despite the divided opinions, many are curious about the trend's effectiveness.
Health Experts And Viral Skincare Trends
Dr. Nava Greenfield, a board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, weighed in on the trend. She told Well+Good that while the morning shed might be captivating due to its unusual appearance, there's no real benefit to it. "Not only is the theory behind its effectiveness not compelling," she said, "but there's also a lack of data to support its use."
One common element in these routines is mouth tape. This forces you to breathe through your nose at night, reducing mouth breathing and snoring. Celebrities like Andrew Huberman and Gwyneth Paltrow have endorsed mouth-taping. However, Dr. Greenfield warns against using it unnecessarily as it can disrupt normal breathing patterns during sleep.
Dr. Greenfield suggests that many creators might be using these techniques more for shock value than as part of their regular routine. "I suspect creators are using these techniques for the shock appeal and rarely actually use them as a committed routine," she said.
If your current routine works for you and includes some of these elements, there's no need to change it. However, it's essential to understand that not all viral trends offer real benefits or are backed by scientific evidence.
The morning shed trend has sparked curiosity and debate among TikTok users and experts alike. While some swear by its refreshing effects, others remain skeptical about its actual benefits.
