Hair Loss In Men
MR. X hates seeing his face in the mirror. Once a college hunk who never had a bad hair day, today faces ugh's and uh's every moment from his friends and family. If this is your story then read on to know the causes and preventions of hair loss in men.
Types of hair loss:
Hair loss in men is a common phenomenon it is more prominent in men than women. There are two types of hair losses, Androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness and Alopecia areata or spotty hair loss. 90% of men suffer from male pattern baldness. At this stage the hair usually thins out in the front of the scalp, and progressively moves to the back and top of head.
Alopecia areata or spotty hair loss is an autoimmune disease, where immune system attacks hair follicles by mistake, thus creating total smooth round patches. There is neither cure nor any medication for such hair loss. The condition can be managed by certain medication or there are possibilities that they may grow on their own. Contact your physician for diagnosis and treatment.
Causes for hair loss:
Hair loss may occur because of aging, change in hormones, illness, family history of baldness, diseases such as high fever, diabetes, thyroid disorders lupus, and recent surgery. Fewer intakes of protein and iron in your diet, chemicals used for dying, bleaching, straightening or hairstyling that pull your hair tight are also the reasons of hair loss on the scalp.
It is a myth that brushing the hair several times a day will stimulate hair growth; on the contrary vigorous brushing worsens the problem. Some men hate wearing helmets or hats as they think that hair cannot breathe and hence they face great hair loss. The fact is only the root of the hair is alive and it gets its oxygen from the blood of the scalp. Men freak when they see a lot of hair fallen on the ground after shower, and advice others not to shampoo their hair frequently. This is again a wrong concept as this hair is shed earlier because of tangles in hair and is washed out when shampooed.
Prevention of hair loss:
Excessive exposure to the sun and pollution can make your hair dry, brittle and faded because of oxidation of the sulfur molecules within the hair shaft. This is the reason why experts recommend shampooing your hair at least three times a week. Choose a shampoo that suits your hair, and do not keep changing the product after every use. Shampoo must be worked through your hair, scalp, and the hairline, as it removes dirt and build up on your hair that can damage the condition of your scalp. Remember that the residual detergents used in shampoo can harm the hair shaft and scalp, so rinse the shampoo completely. Frequent shampooing can dry your hair, so use a conditioner containing light proteins that will strengthen your hair.
Nourishing the hair from outside will just not be enough. Eat foods that contain rich proteins such as meat, egg, cheese and nuts, with vitamins B, C, E, A and K.
Hair loss treatment:
Natural or herbal hair loss treatment:
Lot of men prefer natural hair loss treatment than any other fearing the side effects. The most popular ingredients are green tea, saw palmetto, stinging nettle, pygeum africanum and ginko biloba. Ginko biloba improves the blood circulation of the brain and the skin, which helps in delivering more nutrients to the hair follicle thus promoting hair re growth. Green tea and pygeum are effective in preventing and treating male pattern baldness. Saw palmetto protects from slow hair loss and encourages hair regrowth. Stinging nettle blocks the conversion of testosterone into DHT. It is mostly taken in the form of pill and capsule with pygeum and saw palmetto.
Hair loss treatment through medication:
Propecia (Finasteride): This product is approved by FDA for treating male pattern baldness. DHT or dihydrotestosterone is the key factor in male pattern hair loss. Propecia decrease the concentration of DHT in the scalp. It is more effective when Propecia and Minoxidil are taken together in a combined routine.
Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Tricomin: stimulates regrowth and scalp conditioning. Both the products use specific copper peptides to stimulate inactive follicles naturally into their growth phase. Rogaine should be applied by fingers to the balding area twice a day. Remember if the dosage is decreased once a day, it will result in some hair loss.
