The human body is a unique canvas that has been decorated in many ways for millennia by people all over the world. Since the beginning of human history, people have embellished their bodies like in paint, pierce, tattoo, reshape or simply adorn themselves. Body art is a way of signaling an individual's place in society, marking a special moment, celebrating a transition in life or simply following a fashion.

Tattoos

The history of tattoo began over 5000 years ago in Pacific Islands, India and South East Asia. Despite the social sciences' growing fascination with tattooing, and the immense popularity of tattoos themselves, the practice has not left much of a historical record.

In 1991, a five thousand year old tattooed man 'tzi the ice man' made news all over the world when his frozen body was discovered on a mountain between Austria and Italy. The skin bore 57 tattoos: a cross on the inside of the left knee, six straight lines 15 centimeters long above the kidneys and numerous parallel lines on the ankles. The position of the tattoo marks suggests that they were probably applied for therapeutic reasons (treatment of arthritis).

Tattoos have been the exclusive domain of the eastern culture since centuries...However today they have made their mark on the streets of Paris, New York and Los Angeles and countless others across the world.

Today's tattoos continue to be inspired by the eastern cultures with a strong influence from the western counterparts. They are less about rebellion and instead have become creative expressions of art. If you need a permanent tattoo, all you have to do is select the design and the tattoo is then traced over and colour is filled. One can also acquire colour pigments to add vibrant colours to the tattoo. Smaller tattoos take up about half an hour. The colour might fade depending upon the exposure to sun. The pain is quite bearable and less especially on the outer section of the arms as they have less nerve endings as compared to other sensitive areas, however anesthesia is used very rarely.

If you are not into having your body marked for life, but just want to sport it for a while, this is what you can do...

• Take a black eye pencil and rub the pencil into the palm of your hand then take a small, fine, dry brush and dab it into the colour on your palm.


• Alternatively you could make use of an eye-lining pen for less smudging and more staying power.


• Paint a design you like anywhere you want. Pat your tattoo with translucent powder to set it.


• To remove any temporary tattoo, rub it with baby oil, alcohol or eye makeup remover.
