But never fear, with these simple tricks to keep flies away, you can safeguard your family’s health.

Because flies do not have the teeth or jaws, they moisten solidsby vomiting on them, and then suck up the gooey mess they have made. In the process, they also regurgitate old meals, causing further harm. Flies have been linked to many diseases like typhoid and dysentery. Isn’t that enough to make you want to drive away flies from the very face of the earth?
What are some tricks to keep flies away from our homes? It’s harder to drive away flies than you’d imagine. Evolution has given them excellent eyesight, and the ability to fly out of trouble, as anyone who has tried to swat a fly knows! Here are some tricky tips to keep flies away from your home.

Find the source: Flies love dirt, moisture, garbage and decay. Look around your home and neighbourhood. Are there areas which attract flies or allow their maggots to flourish? Compost bins, garbage dumps, or even storage areas are prime suspects. Thoroughly clean or cover such areas if possible.
Don’t let them in: It’s harder to drive away flies once they enter the home. Keep doors and windows closed as far as possible, to prevent them from entering. Or if you don’t wish to sacrifice sunlight and fresh air, have mesh doors or screens built for your doors and windows.
Clean, clean, clean: Flies love dirt and are attracted by sweet, rotting odours. Wipe all surfaces clean, and make sure they are not sticky with spills or leftovers. Make sure garbage is tightly bagged or the bin lid is firmly closed against all flies.
Cover all food: Good hygiene is essential to drive away flies. Covering food doesn’t just protect it from flies, it also shields it from microorganisms and oxidation. Flies are attracted to ripening fruit, so keep them covered. Meat must especially be covered.
Use aromatic oils and herbs: Conventional chemical sprays are effective, but they are also toxic. Herbs are a natural defence against flies. One of the many tricks to keep flies away that experts recommend is to plant basil and keep it near openings such as doors, through which flies may enter. Some people have mentioned that essential oils such as those of lavender and eucalyptus, are effective to drive away flies.
Trap the critters: There are many smart tricks to keep flies away; some more sophisticated than others. Flypaper is a sticky paper with a sweet scent, which traps flies. Flyswatters, both electrical and non-electrical, are very effective. Search online and you’ll find numerous tutorials for homemade traps which entice flies into water, and kill them by drowning.
