Sit still for a few seconds, look into a small light, and an eye doctor can now see a sliver of your brain. Not metaphorically. The retina, the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye, actually develops from the same embryonic tissue that becomes the brain. That fact alone explains why eye specialists have started paying much closer attention to what the retina might reveal about cognitive health, sometimes years before any memory trouble becomes noticeable.
We spoke to Dr Vipul Singh, Senior Consultant, Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals, who explained what the retina reveals about your brain.
Why the Retina Can Reveal Brain Health
The scan behind most of this is called optical coherence tomography (OCT). Chances are you've already had one without realising how much interest it's generating beyond eye care.
"It works a bit like an ultrasound, except it uses light instead of sound to create a detailed cross-section of the retina's layers within seconds, without needles or discomfort. Eye doctors have relied on OCT for years to monitor glaucoma," said Dr Singh.
What's newer is the discovery that some of these same retinal layers become thinner in people developing Alzheimer's disease and related conditions, often long before family members notice any changes in memory or behaviour.
