In The Tether Of The Self

By Staff

Ramana Maharshi, Peace
Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi guided and guarded His devotees leading them to the ultimate reality, the changeless self.

One day a devotee complained to Bhagavan of lack of peace and felt like taking off to the Himalayas to introduce tranquility to the troubled mind. Bhagavan in His own way of tending His sheep within its tether pointed out that the devotee had travelled about 250Km from Madhurai and has not found the peace that he was looking for. He further asked the devotee to multiply the distance that he had covered (250Km) to reach Thiruvannamalai by the distance to reach Himalayas from Thiruvannamalai in order to measure the happiness that he would experience by going there. Laughter at once broke forth seizing the questioner as well.

On another occasion, a visitor once remarked that he wished to take up Sanyasa, tired of his worldly woes. Bhagavan pointed out to the visitor that once on adorning the ocher robes he would then start complaining of the troubles of a Sanyasi. He further asked the devotee to trace the one who experienced the suffering.

Bhagavan thus time and again monitored the moves of His straying sheep back to its tether, the changeless self.
