Narasimha Jayanti is celebrated as the day when Lord Maha Vishnu took the Avatar of Lord Narasimha. Lord Narasimha Avatar was taken to destroy the tyranny of the Asura King Hiranyakashapu.

Hiranyakashapu was the father of Prahalada who was one of the greatest devotees of Lord Maha Vishnu. Hiranyakashyapu abhorred the Lord Maha Vishnu and asked Prahalada to stop worshipping him. He forced Prahalada to worship Hiranyakashyapu instead like he was doing to the people in his kingdom.

But Prahalada was set in his ways and refused to do so. Hiranyakashyapu tried to kill the boy in various ways and failed to do so. When Prahalada claimed that the Lord was present everywhere, Hiranyakashyapu asked him if the Lord was present in the pillars of his palace.

When Prahalada replied in positive, he smashed the pillar to prove his son wrong. But Lord Narasimha jumped out of the pillar and proceeded to kill the demon king. The day that this happened has since then been celebrated as Narasimha Jayanti.

Narasimha Jayanti is celebrated on the fourteenth day of the Shukla Paksh in the month of Vaishakha. According to the Gregorian calendar, it falls on Tuesday, the 9th of May this year.

On this day, the devotees pray to Lord Narasimha and perform fasts in his honour. It is believed that Lord Narasimha blesses his devotees with fearlessness. He protects his devotees when they are in grave danger. Troubles cannot touch a devotee of Lord Narasimha, be it of any kind.

As the Lord Narasimha is one of the most ferocious forms of Lord Maha Vishnu, it is important that the devotees do not take the worship of the Lord lightly. One must not be careless in the worship of the Lord.

There are stringent rules and regulations for the worship of Lord Narasimha. But if they are followed correctly with a pure and devout mind, Lord Narasimha is known to be pleased quite fast. With his mercy and grace, the devotees shall receive success, wealth, health, prosperity and happiness.

Mantras To Chant To Please Lord Narasimha

Narasimha Maha Mantra

"Om hrim ksaumugram viram mahavivnumjvalantam sarvatomukham।
Nrsimham bhisanam bhadrammrtyormrtyum namamyaham ॥"

It says: O Lord Maha Vishnu! You are angry and brave. The heat and fire you produce permeates everything. You are the one that kills death itself and I surrender to you.

Reciting this Mantra regularly with a devout heart shall help you gain the protection of Lord Narasimha. He shall destroy all your troubles like he destroyed the demon Hiranyakashayapu.

Narasimha Pranama Prayer

"Namaste narasimhaya, prahladahlada-dayine, hiranyakasipor vaksah, sila-tanka nakhalaye |"

Ito nrsimhah parato nrsimho, yato yato yami tato nrsimhah, bahir nrsimho hrdaye nrsimho, nrsimham adim saranam prapadye ||"

"I bow to Lord Narasimha, who is the Joy of Prahalada. Maharaj Narasimha, your nails are like chisels working on the chest of the demon King Hiranyakashapu who has chest that resembles stones.

Lord Narasimha is here and is also present there. No matter where I go, Lord Narasimha is present there. He is in the outside world and also in my heart. I take refuge in the supreme lord and the origin of everything in the world."

This mantra is used for gaining protection and to relieve people from debts incurred. No matter how grave the situation is, protection is provided by Lord Narasimha.

Dasavatara Stotra

"Tava kara-kamala-vare nakham adbhuta-srngam,
dalita-hiranyakasipu-tanu-bhrngam,
kesava dhrta-narahari-rupa jaya jagadisa hare ||"

"O Lord Keshava, I bow before you who have taken birth as the half-man, half-lion avatara. As one would crush a wasp between his fingers, you crush Hiranyakashyapu with your nails on the hands that resemble a beautiful lotus."

Kamasikashtakam

"Tvayi raksati raksakaih kimanyaih,
tvayi caraksati raksakaih kimanyaih iiti niscita dhih srayami nityam,
nrhare vegavati taṭasrayam tvam॥"

"O Lord Kamashaktha! You are all powerful. When you have decided to save someone, no one can harm them. When you have abandoned someone, no one can save them. I have surrendered myself to your lotus feet that rest on the banks of Vegavati river. Please save me from the worldly miseries."

Divya Prabandham

"Adi adi agam karaindhu isaipadip padik kannir malgi engumnadi nadi narasinga endru, vadi vaduum ivval nuthale ||"

"I shall dance until my heart melts to see you, Lord Narasimha. I shall sing your praises with tears in my eyes if I could see you. I am a householder who still dreams to reach you, O lord Narasimha!"

Narasimha Gayatri Mantra

"Om Nrisimhaye vidmahe vajranakhaya dhimahi tan no simhah Prachodayat |
Vajra nakhaya vidmahe tikshna damstraya dhimahi tan no narasimhah Prachodayat ||"

"Om! Let us all bow to the lightning nailed Lord. May the Lion in him encourage our good thoughts and deeds. Let us all think of the Possessor of thunderbolt like nails and sharp teeth. May the Lord Narasimha be praised."

Sri Narasimha Maha Mantra

"Ugram viram maha-vishnum jvalantam sarvato mukham |
nrisimham bhishanam bhadram mrityur mrityum namamy aham ||"

"I bow to Lord Narasimha, who is like Lord Maha Vishnu in his bravery and courageousness. He burns like fire on all sides. He is ferocious and auspicious. He is the one who is the death of deaths."

This Mantra is especially beneficial to anyone who is in great danger. If recited properly and regularly, this mantra becomes a kavacha for the devotee and he is sure to surpass any difficulty or problems.

Narasimha Prapatti

"Mata narasimha, pita narasimha
Bratha narasimha, sakha narasimha
Vidyaa narasimha, dravinam narasimha
Swami narasimha, sakalam narasimha
Itho narasimha, paratho narasimha
Yatho yatho yahihi, tatho narasimha
Narasimha devaath paro na kaschit
Tasmaan narasimha sharanam prapadye ||"

"Lord Narasimha is father, mother, brother and friend to me. He is all the knowledge and wealth in the world. Lord Narasimha is my master and he is Omnipresent. Wherever I go, He is always present. He is the supreme and there is no one other than him. I take refuge in you, O mighty, Lord Narasimha."

This is a great mantra to chant whenever you are scared, in grave danger or in the presence of miseries or negative thoughts. This mantra gives the power and courage to surpass all danger.
