Hymns To Please Goddess Durga

By Subodini Menon

Goddess Durga is an incarnation of the Mother Goddess Mahadevi. She is the result of the combined power of the the trinity of Goddesses - Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Parvati.

The Goddess's form is intimidating and enchantingly beautiful at the same time. With her thousand hands that hold various weapons and artifacts, she rushes to the help of a devotee who prays to her with a true heart.

The story of Goddess Durga starts with the Asura named Rambha. He performs a penance to please Lord Agni and receives a boon that he would be blessed with a boy who cannot be killed by men, animals or Gods.

He falls in love with Mahishi (Princess Shyamala who was cursed to become a water buffalo) and has a son named Mahishasura. Already powerful, Mahishasura performs hard penance to please Lord Brahma. He receives more powers from Lord Brahma. With all his powers, Mahishasura begins to terrorize the humans and Gods.

As per the story, the people and Gods then pray to the great mother Mahadevi and with her blessings, Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Parvati and Goddess Saraswati put their powers together to form a woman.

The woman also receives the tejas of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma. The woman appears with a thousand hands and hence she came to be known as Katyayini, as she was created in the ashram of Sage Katyayan.

She was also named Durga which meant 'the invincible'. The Gods offered her various weapons and a ferocious lion. Armed with these and seated on the lion, she fought a long and terrifying battle. At the end of the battle, the wicked asura, Mahishasura lay defeated and dead.

Here, we have compiled a list of mantras that are most effective in pleasing Goddess Durga. Chant these with a true and devoted heart and the Goddess will always protect you from the evil and hardship.
