Soundarya Lahari Sloka 1: Benefits, Rituals, And Meaning

Sri vidya is a very mysterious sadhana which requires to be initiated only by a master to the disciple. Soundarya lahari has stemmed out of Sri vidya and it happens to be a branch. Each sloka or verse has a specific deity that represents it and also different yantras for different verses. The governing Deity is Tripura Sundari, for Srividya Sadhana.

soundarya

All the yoginis signifying the slokas of Soundarya Lahari are forms of Goddess Srividya. Comprised of 100 verses, soundarya lahari, from 1-41 slokas was composed by Lord Shiva and the 42-100 slokas were composed by Adi Shankaracharya. Let us know some information about the first sloka which helps us to explore it further and get initiated into it.

Origin of soundarya lahari

One day Adi Shankaracharya visited Kailas to meet Lord Shiva and Parvati, Lord Shiva blessed him with a book of 100 verses penned by himself. Pleased, Adi SHankaracharya came back from Kailas. On the way, Nandi, the favourite vehicle of Lord Shiva, rushed towards him and snatched away a sizeable part of it and returned to Kailas.

Highly disappointed, Shankaracharya returns to Kailas and complains against Nandi. Lord Shiva answers him by telling " about 41 verses written by me are retained with you. Writing the remaining 42-100 slokas is your responsibility and you will be able to complete it." Adi Shankara did as he was told. The book of Soundarya Lahari was completed and was handed down to deserving devotees to continue the tradition of Shakti worship.
