Narkel Diye Cholar Dal Recipe: How To Make Bengali-style Chana Dal With Fried Coconut
Narkel diye cholar dal is a traditional Bengali-style dal recipe that is prepared in most households for regular meals. Here is a video recipe followed by a step-by-step procedure and images.
Narkel diye cholar dal is a special Bengali version of the chana dal and is prepared commonly in most Bengali households. The Bengali-style chana dal is prepared by cooking chana dal with aromatic dried spices and a hint of fried coconut pieces, adding flavour to this already flavourful dish.
The chana dal with narkel is simple and quick to make and is traditionally prepared for all Bengali festivals. This is a 'no onion and no garlic' dish and is mainly eaten with luchis or rice. A spoonful of this dal already colours the palate with all the spices and leaves you craving for more.

NARKEL DIYE CHOLAR DAL VIDEO RECIPE

Chana dal - ¾th cup
Water - 2½ cups + for rinsing
Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
Oil - 2 tbsp
Coconut slices (cut into one-inch strips) - ¾th cup
Hing (asafoetida) - ¼th tsp
Jeera - 1 tsp
Bay leaf - 1
Elaichi (cardamom) - 2
Cloves - 2
Cinnamon stick - an inch piece
Dried red chillies - 2
Ginger (grated) - 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Sugar - 1 tsp
Raisins - 5

1. Add chana dal in a sieve.
2. Rinse it thoroughly with water.
3. Transfer it into a bowl.
4. Add 2 cups of water and allow it to soak for 10 minutes.
5. Add the soaked dal along with the water into a pressure cooker.
6. Add half a cup of water.
7. Add turmeric powder.
8. Pressure cook it for up to 4 whistles on medium flame.
9. Allow the pressure in the cooker to settle.
10. Meanwhile, add oil in a heated pan.
11. Add the coconut pieces.
12. Roast for 3-4 minutes, until it turns light brown.
13. Remove from the pan and keep it aside.
14. Add hing in the same pan.
15. Add jeera and a bay leaf.
16. Then, add elaichi and cloves.
17. Add a cinnamon stick and dried red chillies.
18. Sauté for about 30 seconds.
19. Add the grated ginger and mix well.
20. Add the cooked dal.
21. Add salt to taste.
22. Add sugar and raisins.
23. Mix well and allow it to cook for 4-5 minutes.
24. Add the fried coconut pieces.
25. Transfer it into a bowl and serve hot.
