Moong Dal Payasam Recipe | Hesaru Bele Payasa Recipe | Pasi Paruppu Payasam Recipe
Moong dal payasam is a traditional South Indian kheer that is prepared during festivals and other ceremonies and is offered to God as naivedyum. Here is a detailed procedure with images and a video.
Moong dal payasam is a South Indian delicacy that is prepared during festivals as an offering to God. Pasi paruppu payasam, as it is known in Tamil Nadu, is made with cooked moong dal, jaggery and milk as the main ingredients.
Jaggery sweets are believed to be healthier than white sugar sweets and hence is the best option for a healthy yet toothsome sweet during festivals and celebrations. In Kerala, moong dal payasam is either made with coconut milk or grated coconut as an ingredient.

MOONG DAL PAYASAM VIDEO RECIPE

Moong dal - ½ cup
Water - 1¼th cup + for rinsing
Jaggery powder - ¾th cup
Milk - 1 cup
Chopped almonds - 1 tsp
Raisins - 4-6
Cardamom powder - 1 tsp

1. Add moong dal in a heated pan.
2. Dry roast until the raw smell goes away and the dal starts to change its colour.
3. Pour it into a sieve.
4. Rinse it with water.
5. Add the washed moong dal in a pressure cooker.
6. Add a cup of water and pressure cook it for up to 2 whistles and allow it to cool.
7. Meanwhile, add jaggery powder in a heated pan.
8. Add quarter cup of water and allow it to cook until the jaggery melts.
9. Remove it from the stove and allow it to cool for 10 minutes.
10. Open the lid of the cooker and mix the dal well.
11. Once again heat the cooker, and add milk.
12. Allow it to boil.
13. Add jaggery syrup and mix well.
14. Allow it to cook for 7-10 minutes by stirring occasionally.
15. Add chopped almonds and raisins.
16. Add cardamom powder and mix well.
17. Transfer in a bowl and serve hot.
- 1. You can add coconut milk instead of normal milk.
- 2. Grated coconut can be added to give it a different flavour and texture.
