Hayagreeva is a traditional Karnataka-style sweet recipe that is offered to God as naivedyam. Here is a video recipe followed by a detailed procedure with images.
Hayagreeva is an authentic Karnataka-style sweet recipe that is mainly prepared as naivedyam and offered to God during festive seasons. The hayagriva maddi is prepared by cooking chana dal in jaggery syrup with grated coconut and dry fruits added to it.
Also known as hoorana in Karnataka, this sweet is made during religious ceremonies and distributed among all after prayers. In this recipe, we have added poppy seeds to add flavour to it.
The chana dal halwa is a delectable sweet that is filling, but it sure leaves you craving for more. Hayagreeva is a simple recipe to follow and here is a step-by-step procedure with images. Also, watch the video and learn how to make the hayagreeva maddi recipe at home.
HAYAGREEVA VIDEO RECIPE

Chana dal - 1 cup
Water - 3 cups
Jaggery - 2 cups
Poppy seeds - 1½ tbsp
Ghee - 9 tbsp
Raisins - 2 tbsp
Dry grated coconut - ¾th bowl
Broken cashew nuts - 2 tbsp
Cloves - 4-5
Cardamom powder - 2½ tsp

1. Add chana dal in a bowl.
2. Add 2 cups of water and soak it for half an hour.
3. Add the soaked chana dal into a pressure cooker.
4. Add half a cup of water.
5. Pressure cook it for up to 4-5 whistles and allow it to cool.
6. Open the lid, mash the dal slightly and keep it aside.
7. Add jaggery into a heated pan.
8. Immediately, add half a cup of water.
9. Allow the jaggery to dissolve completely and allow it to boil for 5-7 minutes on a medium flame.
10. Add the cooked dal in the syrup.
11. Stir well.
12. Add poppy seeds and mix well.
13. Add 3 tablespoons of ghee.
14. Allow it to cook for 15 minutes.
15. Add raisins and dry grated coconut.
16. Add another 5 tablespoons of ghee and mix well.
17. Allow it to cook for 2 minutes.
18. Meanwhile, add a tablespoon of ghee into a small pan.
19. Add the broken cashew nuts and sauté for 2 minutes, until it turns light brown.
20. Then, add cloves.
21. Add the roasted cashew nut mixture onto the dal-jaggery mix.
22. Add cardamom powder and mix well.
23. Serve hot.

STEP BY STEP - HOW TO MAKE HAYAGREEVA
