During the time of pregnancy, the body of a woman keeps undergoing transformations. It takes time to adjust oneself to all these. Some may even find it difficult to cope with the growing bump and the weight gained in the body. Pregnant women have plenty of issues to deal with, which are part and parcel of this phase. When an illness occurs during this time, it only gets worse.
Cough and cold is a common illness that occurs to anyone for that matter. Some of the symptoms include irritated throat, runny nose, tiredness, continuous sneezing, and many others. Even before any of these happen to you, it is better to take steps to prevent both a cough and cold.
There are certain habits that can be included in your routine, which will definitely work out. However, there is no need to worry much about getting a cold or cough, as the baby in the womb is well protected from them. But it is not advised to take the problem lightly. Listed below are the things to be done to prevent a cough and cold.
Get A Flu Vaccine
There is no better medical way to prevent cold. It can be taken at any point of time during the pregnancy, even as late as the third trimester. In fact, the protection from cold extends to six months after giving birth. Getting a flu shot will not affect the baby in any manner. It is absolutely safe during pregnancy.
Wash Hands Regularly
Maintaining personal hygiene is the best way to avoid catching a cold and cough. Hand contact with people having a cold is risky because the virus spreads this way. Sometimes, hand contact is completely unavoidable. Hence, it is suggested to wash hands often with mild warm soapy water to prevent the virus from entering the body.
Use A Hand Sanitizer
When outside, it might not be possible to wash hands. For this, carry a hand sanitizer with you. The alcohol content in the sanitizer drastically reduces the spread of the virus. If you do not like the smell of the alcohol, opt for a sanitizer with a fruity essence, so that you do not feel nauseated.
Increase Fluid Intake
Having plenty of fluids can help with a cough and cold. Fluids have the capacity to flush out the toxins from the body. Fluids do not include only water but fruit juices too. Tea can be consumed but it is best to go for decaffeinated one, as caffeine affects the baby in an adverse manner. Herbal teas are a good option.
Have A Balanced Diet
Consuming the right food prevents a cough and cold easily. See to it that you include all the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in your diet to help the immune system to function better. Steer clear off sugary snacks and opt for foods that are rich in vitamin C when you have the tendency to catch a cold.
Keep Stress At Bay
Your immune system gets affected when under stress. A weak immune system is easily prone to illness of even minute measures. So, do not stress out both physically and mentally. Ensure that you get enough rest during the day too. Stress can be avoided effectively by doing some meditation and deep breathing exercises.
Stay Away From People With Cold And Cough
If someone around you has caught a cold or a cough, stay away from them until they get cured. Staying away does not mean maintaining the physical distance alone. In addition, it is best not to share anything with the affected person, be it cutlery or any towels.
Don’t Touch Your Face
If you have a doubt that your hands are not clean enough, it is better not to touch your face. This is because the virus enters the body via the mouth and nostrils. Even if you have washed the hands, do not touch the face unnecessarily, as you never know if the virus is present or not.
Keep Spaces Around You Clean
Bacteria and virus thrive everywhere around you, especially when the surroundings are not clean. This is one of the practical measures that can be taken to avoid cough and cold. Dust and moisture can cause issues if not cleaned then and there. Dust can cause terrific issues, even whooping cough during pregnancy. The presence of moisture can lead to chest congestion. It is good to develop the habit of cleaning your space.
