If a pregnant woman does not take the necessary precautions during her pregnancy, she can be prone to delivering a premature baby, that is, giving birth before the gestational period is complete.
There are a number of serious health problems involved when it comes to a premature infant. Read on to find out what some of them are.
1. Difficulty In Breathing
Many premature babies experience difficulty in breathing, as their respiratory systems may not be fully developed. This may prove to be fatal or lead to chronic respiratory disorders.
2. Low Blood Pressure
Premature infants can also experience low blood pressure, as their blood vessels may not be strong enough to sustain normal blood flow. This may lead to various heart defects later on.
3. Blood Disorders
Conditions such as anaemia, jaundice and other blood-related issues are quite common in premature babies, as their blood cells may be weakened due to under-development.
4. Weak Immune System
A weak immune system is also a common risk factor seen in premature babies, as their immune systems are not fully developed. This condition may make them susceptible to various diseases.
5. Abnormal Metabolism
In many premature babies, the metabolic rate is very slow. This may hamper the normal functioning of the organs and lead to an irregular hormone production.
6. Vision And Hearing Problems
There is a high risk of vision and hearing-related disorders in premature babies, as these organs are under-developed in them. The parents must get them checked in the initial few days, so that they can be corrected.
7. Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy is a serious neuro-physiological disorder that affects the muscles and impairs normal movement. Premature babies are more prone to this disorder, as they have an abnormal blood flow and an under-developed nervous system.
8. Behavioural Disorders
Many premature babies suffer from behavioural and psychological issues during their childhood due to an under-developed nervous system. Conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), poor cognitive skills, etc, can be noticed.
