Another feather has been added to Indian's color plumage as Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, the present Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), was appointed as the Deputy Director General of Programmes of the WHO (World Health Organization) by WHO head, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus this Tuesday.

And while this appointment is making the entire country proud, it was not a surprising one since Dr. Swaminathan is quite well-known around the world for her incredible contributions, research, and work in controlling tuberculosis and HIV.

In fact, this is what the WHO said about her appointment, "a globally-recognized researcher on tuberculosis and HIV, she brings with her 30 years of experience in clinical care and research and has worked throughout her career to translate research into impactful programmes".

An MBBS alumni of Armed Forces Medical College, Dr. Swaminathan finished her masters in pediatrics from AIIMS, and subsequently earned a fellowship in pediatric pulmonology from the University of South California, USA.

In fact, she is the daughter of Dr. M. S. Swaminathan who is credited as the pioneer of the Green Revolution in India.
