Did You Know That Sleep Affects Your Sperm? A New Study Finds
Know how lack of adequate sleep can affect the sperm count.Check here for details.
The food that you eat is important in providing you the needed energy, likewise having a good night's sleep is also equally important. Lack of proper sleep can lead to several health problems.
A new study has found that lack of adequate amount of sleep can have serious implications on the sperm count. The study suggests that there is a link between the duration of sleep and a measure of chromosomal health in sperm.
For the study, the researchers had taken into consideration, 2020 semen sample which was provided by 796 male volunteers from colleges in Chongqing (China) from 2013 -2015.
During the course of the study it was found that men who slept for nine hours everyday and those who slept for 6.5 hours or less had 41 percent and 30 percent respectively lower High DNA Stainability. The DNA Stainability is an index that represents the proportion of sperm with abnormal chromatin. Chromatin is a complex of DNA and proteins that forms chromosomes.
One needs to understand that like the lack of sleep, too much of sleep is also not good. "As it was found in the previous study that these two semen parameters were highest when sleep is 7.0 to 7.5 hours per day, and either longer or shorter sleep was associated with the decrease of the two semen parameters.", said Dr. Jia Cao, co-author of the study.
The study was recently published in the journal of Sleep Research.
Also if you want to know how sleep affects your health then you need to check here.
1. Weak Immunity:
Sleep is important to build up your immunity level. As you sleep your immune system produces cytokines. These are the protective layer that helps in fighting the infections and prevents the body from bacteria and virus. If you do not have proper sleep then your body fails to produce adequate amount of cytokines and leads to weakening of the immune system.
2. Heart Problem:
Sleep is very important to keep your blood vessels healthy. An adequate amount of sleep everyday helps in healing any blood vessel and heart quickly. Several studies have pointed out how lack of sleep can increase the risk of heart diseases.
3. Weight Gain:
Lack of sleep can lead one to become overweight and obese. Sleep affects the two hormones, leptin and ghrelin, which controls the hunger. So when you are not able to balance these two hormones you tend to eat more and there are higher chances of becoming obese.
4. Increases Risk Of Diabetes:
When you do not have an adequate amount of sleep, it affects the insulin level. Your body tends to release more insulin after you eat. This in turn leads to increasing risk for type 2 diabetes.
5. Affects Nervous System:
A good amount of sleep is important for the brain to provide the needed rest and prepare itself for the next day. So when you are not able to get adequate sleep it affects the nervous system. Lack of sleep can cause exhaustion of the brain, this affects concentration and your work gets hampered. If not taken care of on time then it might lead to depression as well.
