India celebrates flurry of sweet sticky treats in its every festive moments. They may vary from place to place but the main ingredients remain the same. Various regional recipes are only different forms of ghee or clarified butter and khoya (a type of evaporated milk), or condensed milk to make desserts.

The sugar used to make the sweets is made from cane or from palms or the rougher tasting jaggery. Flour used is usually made from pulses (chickpea, dahl), rice or wheat. Laddu

One of the popular sweet in India is also known as sandy balls. It is made of flour and other ingredients and formed into balls, which are later dipped in the sugary syrup. It is often prepared in every Indian festival be it Deewali or Eid or Easter. The most famous Laddu's till date is Tirupatti laddu made at Tirumalla in Andhra Pradesh. Motichor Ka Ladoo, Besan laddu, Rava laddu, Narkel Naru and Malpoa are other most famous Inadian Laddus. They are usually decorated with raisins, almonds, pistachio, cardamom, edible silver leaf (available from Indian speciality foodstores), and sometimes saffron.

Gulab Jamun
Popularly known, as Indian Doughnuts are little round cakey fried small balls made from curds and soaked in sugar syrup. It can also be seen in darker shades as kala jamun, literally "black jamun".

Rasgulla Also known, as Ras Gulla or Rassgula is the most popular dessert from Orissa and Bengal. The sweets are balls made of unripened cheese or cottage cheese soaked in sugar syrup.

Jalebi
This orange-fried coil of flours and yoghurt batter dipped in sugar syrup is a popular breakfast dish in North India. Buttermilk or soured curds can replace the yoghurt. They taste the best when eaten hot.

Mysore pak
The list of best Indian sweets would be incomplete without its mention. The popular south Indian sweets served in every celebration is a brown sweet crumbly cake made of clarified butter, sugar and chickpea

Halva-
Halvas are made of a range of flavours. The most popular ones are made of grated carrot. Lentils, semolina and sweet potatoes can also be used in making Halwa. A special halwa made with wheat flour is a traditional ritual offering. Bombay Halwa is another variety that is rubbery and sticky, vicious-coloured translucent jelly often orange or emerald in colour. It is held together with sago, semolina or corn flour and slightly reminiscent of Turkish delight crossed with a wine gum.
