Google Doodle Celebrates Har Gobind Khorana’s Birth Anniversary!

Google Doodle today honours the great "Har Gobind Khorana", on his 96th birth anniversary, who was an Indian-born American biochemist!

It's the birth anniversary of the great man who became renowned for his research on role of nucleotides in protein synthesis.

Check out more details on this Indian-born biochemist who went on to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

He Was Born In India…

Har Gobind Khorana was born on January 9th, 1922, in Raipur, India. He died on November 9th, 2011, in Concord, Massachusetts, USA. He was an Indian-born American biochemist who shared the 1968 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

He Shared His Noble Prize With…

Har Gobind Khorana shared the 1968 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. He shared the Noble Prize with Marshall W. Nirenberg and Robert W. Holley for research, in which he showed how the nucleotides in nucleic acids carry the genetic code of the cell. These nucleotides control the cell's synthesis of proteins as well.

His Achievements…

Apart from winning the Nobel Prize, Khorana received the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award in 1968 and also the National Medal of Science in 1987.

His Research…

Khorana confirmed about Nirenberg's findings in which he showed that it had the four different types of nucleotides that are arranged on the spiral "staircase" of the DNA molecules.

It also determines the chemical composition and function of a new cell. He was the first person to demonstrate the role of nucleotides in protein synthesis. He also proved that the nucleotide code is always transmitted to the cell in groups of 3 and this process is called codons.

His Life...

In 1960, Khorana apparently moved to the Institute for Enzyme Research at the University of Wisconsin. After a period of time, he became a naturalised citizen of the US. He also became a Professor of Biology and Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A Tribute From Google…

Genetic engineering has been made possible only due to the ability to synthesize DNA, by the help of the study on nucleotides. With Google paying tribute to him, he well-deserves this great tribute.
