Father’s Day 2021: Make Sure Your Father Undergoes These Tests
Father's Day is celebrated every year on the third Sunday of June. The day is recognised to celebrate fatherhood and thank the contributions of fathers and father figures. As a father is a very important member of a family, the day is celebrated in honour of every father and their key role in the lives of their kids.
Father's Day is the perfect time to bestow your love and care to your old man who has spent all his life taking care of his family, often ignoring his health. There are several ageing issues and lifestyle disorders such as diabetes and hypertension which are faced by our father. Take a look at the few important tests which are necessary for your father and make sure they undergo these tests.
COVID-19: Why Men Are More Likely To Die Compared To Women

1. High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure (HBP) is one of the common yet life-threatening issues in men, especially if they have a family history for the condition. Get their HBP check done on time and if it is high, make sure they take prescribed medications. The medications for HBP also help to keep away other conditions like stroke and kidney diseases. Don't forget to get the test done every six months. [1]

2. Diabetes
If your father is a prediabetic or has excess weight, make sure to get his diabetes test done. Obesity is one of the main risk factors for diabetes. Also, if your father has high blood pressure or high cholesterol problems, get his diabetes test done in every three months. If he is already a diabetic, regularly check the glucose levels and make sure they maintain a healthy lifestyle.

3. Cholesterol Check
According to the American Heart Association, adults over 35 should get their cholesterol check done every five years. The high levels of LDL cholesterol cause buildup in the arteries and increases the risk of stroke or other heart diseases. [2]

4. Colorectal Cancer Screening
Men between the age 50-75 are at increased risk of colorectal cancer, especially if they have a history of colon cancer or adenomatous polyps. Multiple tests are included in colorectal cancer screening which are carried out every year, in every three years, in every five years and every ten years. If a doctor suspects your father for the condition, make sure he does all the tests.

5. Eye Test
Eye or vision problems are common in people of old age. Glaucoma and cataract are one of the leading vision-related problems in people above the age 60. Get your father's eye test done every two years and if he is a diabetic, consider doing it in every six months. Also, make sure he maintains healthy lifestyle habits.

6. Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer affects men above 50 years of age and is the most common form of cancer in men. It is highly treatable, if diagnosed on time. Make sure to get your father's prostate-specific-antigen-test done on time. Also, ask a doctor about how to reduce the risk of the condition. [3]

7. Seasonal Infections
Seasonal infections like dengue, typhoid and malaria tend to occur more in people above 50 years due to their weak immune system. Look for the symptoms in your father and if they have symptoms like severe joint pain and frequent fevers, get them screened for infectious diseases.

8. Lipid Profile
Lipid profile test is carried out to measure the ‘good' and ‘bad' cholesterol levels in our body. High levels of LDL and triglycerides and low levels of HDL is considered unhealthy. This may increase the risk of metabolic syndrome, a group of diseases such as diabetes, stroke, heart stroke and hypertension. [4]

9. Mental Health Problems
Mental issues such as depression and anxiety are higher in older adults due to physical problems, loneliness, lack of energy, low motivation, unhealthy lifestyle and family problems. Don't avoid this common yet critical issue and get their screening done on time for depression. The best way is to care for your father and help them get engaged in social activities.

10. Testicular Cancer Test
The test is mainly recommended for men below age 55. Consider doing it as a part of regular checkup to decrease the risk of the condition. Advise them to consult a medical expert if they observe any signs of hard lumps or changes in shape and size of the testes.

11. Skin Cancer test
Many studies suggest that older men above 50 age are more likely to get melanoma (a type of skin cancer) compared to women. Advise them to check for any changes in their moles that have changed in colour, structure or increased in size with time.

12. Hepatitis Testing
A study suggests that males are at greater risk of developing hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections compared to females, especially if he is a healthcare worker or his profession involves travelling. [5] Get their test done as part of a regular checkup.

To Conclude:
For a healthier tomorrow for your father, advise him to follow a healthy lifestyle and don't ignore his health. Also, make sure he gives up habit of smoking or drinking (if he has any). Remember, the best gift you could give to your father is a healthier tomorrow.
