10 Foods That Curb Sugar Cravings
Do you eat sweets or sugary foods at least once every day?
Do you always order desserts and sweet dishes when you go out to eat?
If yes, then chances are, you could have a "sweet tooth" or a personality trait in which people love sweets and sugary foods to no end!
Especially, in a country like India, there is no dearth of sweet dishes and most of them are delicious! So, it could be quite hard to resist them, if you have a "sweet tooth".
But, most of us would already know that consuming excess sugary foods, chocolates, ice creams, sweets and the likes can have a serious impact on our health!
Diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension and even cancer are some of the health risks of consuming too much sugar.
So, here is a list of foods that can curb sugar cravings, naturally.
1. Cucumber
As we know, cucumber is a cooling, healthy vegetable that we all consume on a regular basis. Cucumber is rich in vitamin C, fibre and antioxidants, which is why it comes with many health benefits such as treating acidity, aiding weight loss, etc. Now, since cucumber has the ability to reduce the production of digestive acids in your stomach, it can also help reduce the sugar cravings, as digestive acids can be responsible for causing sugar cravings!
2. Spirulina
Many of us would be familiar with Spirulina, as it is used in the preparation of healthy juices, right? Spirulina comes with health benefits such as improving eye and hair health, detoxifying your system, treating indigestion, etc. Spirulina has an enzyme known as tyrosine in it, which can increase the dopamine levels in the brain. A healthy dopamine level in the brain can reduce sugar cravings.
3. Cheese
Yes, cheese, although is considered to be a "taboo" food among people watching their weight, it can actually help you stop craving for sweets, as cheese also contains the enzyme tyrosine, which can help boost the dopamine level in the brain to curb sugar cravings. So, whenever you cannot stop craving for that unhealthy chocolate bar, consuming a small piece of cheese can help!
4. Eggs
Known as one of the most nutritious breakfast foods all over the world, eggs come loaded with protein and other essential minerals, which can improve and maintain our health. Since eggs are rich in protein content, consuming them can keep you fuller for a long time. Sweet cravings often happen when we feel hungry and the blood glucose level drops, so consuming eggs can also keep you away from sweets!
5. Fruit
Each time you feel like you want to binge on some chocolate or a piece of cake, consume a bowl of mixed fruit, without adding anything to it. This habit can also help you fight your sugar cravings because the antioxidants present in fruit can reduce the digestive acids produced in your stomach, which can otherwise cause sugar cravings and also untimely hunger pangs.
6. Lean Meat
We notice that fitness enthusiast and nutritionists always incorporate lean chicken and other lean meats into their diets, right? That is because lean meat is extremely rich in protein and can help build muscles and fight fat. In addition, the protein content in lean meat can also help curb sugar cravings by keeping you full for a longer time.
7. Avocado
Lately, avocados, or butter fruit, have become extremely popular as "super foods" due to their amazing health benefits such as aiding weight loss, improving brain functions, etc. Avocados are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. Many research studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids can also help reduce the hunger signals in the brain and keep your blood glucose levels intact, thus reducing sugar cravings.
8. Olive Oil
Olive oil is a very healthy edible oil, which is used in the preparation of many delicacies. Olive oil is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants, and comes with a number of exceptional health benefits, starting from improving the skin's health to preventing cancer. The antioxidants in olive oil too can help reduce the hunger impulses created in the brain, thus curbing the sugar cravings.
9. Nuts
Doctors and dietitians always advice us to snack on nuts, instead of junk food, right? This is because, nuts are filled with various nutrients and can be extremely healthy for us. So, swapping a candy bar with a handful of nuts can not only make you healthy, but it can also reduce your sugar cravings, by balancing the blood glucose levels.
10. Dark Chocolate
Who doesn't love chocolate, right? While the regular kind of chocolate is filled with sugar and can be unhealthy, dark chocolate is a healthy variant which is devoid of unhealthy sugars and fats, but contains a high amount of antioxidants. So, dark chocolate can also give you a feeling of fullness and curb sugar and junk food cravings!
