60 Year Old Gets The Smallest Pacemaker Implant
60 year old from Northeast first to get the smallest pacemaker implant. Check for more details here.
Pacemaker implantation is one of the widely used method to stabilize the heart rate. However, for those who are frail and weak the pacemaker transplant becomes difficult.
Well, here is some good news. A 60 year old man Taleswar Hazam with intermittent heart block, got the world's smallest pacemaker implanted for the first time at Hayat Hospital in Guwahati.
The pacemaker implanted on Taleswar is just the size of a vitamin capsule, which is one-tenth the size of a traditional pacemaker and the pacemaker has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Dr Chinmoy Majumdar, Interventional Cardiologist from the hospital said: "Tests like ECG and Echocardiography revealed problems with his heart rhythm and confirmed the necessity of a permanent pacemaker."
Speaking about the device he said "Traditional pacemakers require creating a pocket under the skin below the collarbone to place the pacemaker but the patient being of a very lean frame couldn't have supported a pacemaker pocket. Hence, he was adviced to go for a leadless pacemaker which unlike traditional pacemakers does not require wire (lead) and a surgical pocket under the skin to deliver a pacing therapy."
The pacemaker can be implanted entirely inside the heart through a keyhole puncture in the groin (upper thigh area). Meanwhile, the patient has responded well after the surgery and has resumed his daily activities.
