Prolonged menstrual bleeding is a condition that many women out there may face.

Normal menstrual bleeding lasts for three to seven days. If the bleeding goes beyond a week, then this condition is termed prolonged menstrual bleeding or menorrhagia and it may indicate certain underlying diseases.

There are several reasons for prolonged menstrual bleeding. Menorrhagia is a condition in which a woman experiences very heavy or long-lasting period. Polymenorrhoea refers to irregular bleeding that spans for 21 days or less.

1. Dysfunctional Bleeding:

2. Bleeding Disorders:

This occurs for girls during their puberty. If you have prolonged periods after menarche, then you must consult a doctor. This condition might also occur due to lack of vitamins and minerals.


3. Thyroid Disease:

Prolonged bleeding can also occur due to low levels of thyroid hormones in the body. Hence, you need to consult a doctor in order to avoid further complications. This can be one of the reasons for long periods.


4. Hyperprolactinaemia:

This condition is defined by the high levels of prolactin, a hormone which is needed for breast development during pregnancy and also to induce lactation in mothers. This condition is common during pregnancy. This can be one of the reasons why prolonged periods occur.


5. Perimenopause:

Onan average, Indian women reach their menopause stage between the ages of 47 and 51 years. But if you suffer from an early menopause or perimenopause, then you'll have prolonged periods between the age groups of 40 and 45 years.


6. Uterine Fibroids Or Polyps:

This is another one of the reasons for prolonged periods. Fibroids is a condition of benign growth of smooth muscles in the uterus that are not cancerous. Polyps are an overgrowth of cells in the lining of the endometrium. Further, chronic inflammation of the cervix can lead to cervical erosion and hence prolonged periods.


7. Cancer:

If prolonged periods last for more than a week, especially for women in the age group of 45 years or above, it can be a sign of cervical cancer. Hence, it is wise to consult your gynaecologist immediately.


8. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome:

This condition occurs due to hormonal imbalance. This will make it difficult to get pregnant. This can also give rise to the condition of prolonged periods.


9. Ectopic Pregnancy:

If your periods last longer than usual in the case of an ectopic pregnancy, the bleeding can prolong or be heavier. It is considered better to consult a doctor to confirm the same. This is also one of the top reasons for prolonged periods.
