Researchers have identified 13 new genetic variants that increased the risk of developing restless leg syndrome.
According to the researchers, the finding may help inform potential new treatment options for the chronic condition.
Unusual sensation in the legs accompanied with an urge to move is one of the major symptoms of restless leg syndrome. Also those suffering from restless leg syndrome have disturbed sleep, increased risk of depression, anxiety disorders, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and reduced quality of life.
These findings, published in the journal Lancet Neurology, strengthen the case for restless legs syndrome being a neurodevelopmental disorder whose origins may go back to development in the womb as well as impaired nerve cell growth in later life, the researchers noted.
"The genetic risk variants that we've discovered add more weight to the idea that this condition is related to the development of our nervous system," said Emanuele Di Angelantonio from the Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen in Germany.
For the study, the team compared the genetic data from over 15,000 patients with more than 95,000 controls and identified a further 13 genetic risk variants.

What exactly is restless leg syndrome?
Restless leg syndrome is a disorder that affects a part of the nervous system and causes an urge for the legs to move.

Also this condition is common among patients suffering from end-stage renal failure and who are undergoing dialysis.
How does one acquire restless leg syndrome? Is it curable?
Experts are yet not too sure about the cause for this condition. However, they are of the opinion that it may be caused due to the genes.
Several studies have shown that the treatment for restless leg syndrome can help lessen the symptoms, but there is no total cure for the problem.
Bringing about a certain changes in the lifestyle can be extremely helpful in order to control the symptoms. Regular exercises even if it is half an hour of walking or jogging, a regular sleep pattern be helpful. Also if a person is addicted to caffeine, alcohol and tobacco then they need to avoid them.
Meanwhile, there are few other non-drug treatment methods like massage, using heating and ice packs that help provide relief.
Diagnosis for restless leg syndrome:
Currently there is no specific medical test for restless leg syndrome. However, doctors rely on blood test in order to rule out other conditions. Diagnosis is basically based on the symptoms.
