Curd (a.k.a dahi) is a staple food in India.
Maybe that's why we often overlook it on our quest to eating healthy and right. But ask any South Indian and they will tell you exactly why they cannot live without having a small bowl of it after every meal every single day.
So that's what we are going to explore in more depth in today's episode of Fact vs. Fiction - the impressive benefits of eating curd every day.
And if you missed our take on ginger and its health benefits in yesterday's episode, then don't worry. You can read it right here.
Fact #1: Cow milk curd is better than curd made of buffalo milk.

Health Benefits of Different Types of Milk
Fact #2: You should have fresh curd.
Storing curd for days and then consuming it is not a good idea because it messes up the quality of the bacterial culture in the product.
So if you want to eat curd, we recommend that you have it within 24 hours of fermentation.
Fact #3: Lactose intolerant people can have curd.
People who suffer from lactose intolerance develop diarrhea and gastric problems if they consume milk above a certain threshold quantity. This happens because the acids produced in their stomachs are incapable of digesting milk proteins.
But that's not the case with curd.
This is because curd is produced by fermenting milk, which basically means it is already partially digested by live bacteria.

Fact #4: It improves digestion.
As mentioned in the previous point, curd is produced by fermentation of milk by bacteria. Namely, Lactobacilli. But these bacteria aren't the dangerous kind.
On the contrary, Lactobacilli are also called probiotic bacteria because they replace the colonies of harmful bacteria in our gut, which prevents gastric disorders and diseases and produce vitamin K for our body by digesting the food in our intestines.
Fact #5: Eating curd daily will boost your immunity.
Beside producing vitamin K for us, Lactobacilli also stimulate an increase in the number of B and T lymphocytes in our body (a.k.a the white knights of immunity).
In fact, if you have two cups of curd every day for 4 months, your immunity will be enhanced by five times.
Fact #6: It improves your sexual health.
Curd is a natural aphrodisiac. But it's effects on your sexuality are not just restricted to enhancing your libido and stamina.
In fact, it also has the ability to reduce impotence and increase the volume of semen produced.
Fact #7: It improves your skin tone.
Forget about other natural remedies. Eating curd every day is the safest and cheapest way to improve your beauty.
This is because curd is rich in vitamin E, zinc, phosphorus, and other micro-minerals, which can firm up your skin, reduce acne, and remove the signs of aging.
Plus, it is a great moisturizer!
Fact #8: It can heal sunburns.
While aloe vera might be the best remedy for sunburns. It is not always readily available, or cheap.
In such cases, curd is the next best alternative because applying it over sunburns will instantly ease the pain, cool down the area, and reduce the redness.
In fact, for best results, you should apply curd at least 4 - 5 times over your sunburns every day.
Fact #9: Having curd daily will prevent heart diseases.

Curd can help you lose weight in two ways.
One, it reduces the level of cortisol in your blood, which is the hormone responsible for depositing fat around your belly and heart.
And two, it eliminates junk food cravings from your system, and therefore, helps you monitor your diet.
Fact #12: It helps you maintain the strength of your teeth and bones.
Curd is rich in calcium and phosphorus, both of which are minerals required for maintaining the strength of your teeth and bones.
In fact, a Japanese study of 1000 healthy adults found that eating curd every day improved the oral health of the participants by reducing the population of harmful bacteria in their mouth, which in turn reduced the incidence of dental caries and gum disease.
Fact #13: It a great stress-buster!
Cortisol doesn't just make you fat. It also increases your stress levels.

If you are anorexic or have lost interest in eating food (because of depression, cancer, or any other disease), then you should definitely add curd to your daily diet as it is an excellent appetite-building food.
Fact #15: It is the perfect food if you are suffering from diarrhea.
You may not want to eat anything when you are suffering from diarrhea, but you should make an exception when it comes to curd.
This is because this simple yet divine food is capable of absorbing excess fluids from your gut and reducing the frequency of your bathroom bouts.
Fact #16: It is helpful in bleeding disorders.
Vitamin K is an important clotting factor in your blood. So if you have bleeding disorders or liver cirrhosis, you should definitely add curd to your diet as the Lactobacilli in it will help replenish this vitamin in your blood.
