Winter is fast approaching. And so is the season of various illnesses.
People are more prone to infections and flu during this season because of a simple fact. People like to stay indoors in the cold weather. This makes them more prone to catching infections from an already sick person. The ventilation is poor during the season which makes indoors warmer than the outdoors and this is where the micro-organisms thrive.
The most common infection that is highly communicable and moves on from one person to another easily is sinus infections. The virus causing this infection spreads easily.
Our sinuses are passages which are situated in our skull bone. They regulate the flow of air and mucus. The fine hair present on the inner surface of the passage filters any unwanted materials from the air.
When virus enters the passage, they settle on the surface, causing it to inflame. This results in blocked passages. The body produces more mucus to fight off the infection which further alleviates the issue.
When our sinuses are blocked, we often experience headaches. This is because the sinus passages also act as air pockets which reduce the weight of our skull. Hence, blocked sinuses give us a feeling of heavy-headedness.
Sinus bouts can be frustrating and can affect our daily life. The best way to treat them though, is by using natural ingredients, particularly garlic.
Though not liked by many for its strong flavour and pungent taste, garlic is a super sinus-reliever.
As the infection is caused by inflammation of the inner lining of the sinus passages, garlic reduces inflammation and treats the root of the problem and the sulphur compound called allicin present in garlic is what makes this happen.
Once the swelling is down, the mucus is drained, opening the passage again. It is also an excellent anti-biotic.
Here is an excellent recipe for garlic drink which will reduce the symptoms of sinus infections.
Garlic And Radish Drink-
This drink contains other ingredients along with garlic such as onions and radishes. Both of them have high sulphur content which treat sinuses effectively. The strong scent of onions helps clear the passages. Its anti-bacterial properties kill the germs. Radishes on the other hand help clear mucus and dispel it from the body.
-5-6 garlic cloves
-1 tablespoon lemon juice
-1 tablespoon honey
1) Peel the garlic cloves and onions.
2) Chop the onions and radish into small pieces.
3) Boil the three ingredients in a stock pot.
4) After 15 minutes, strain the liquid.
5) Add lemon juice and honey to it and drink.
This drink should be had warm in order to be highly effective. Also, sinus infections are very common and spread easily. So, make sure to keep your surroundings clean in case of work places too and always wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer in case of non-availability of water.
Although natural remedies do work, in case of prolonged symptoms, it is better to consult a doctor and get the right medication.
