Toenail fungal infection usually occurs when a fungi called dermatophyte start to grow underneath the toenails.

This condition makes the nail to become very crusty, thick, discoloured and distorted. When the infection gets worse, the toenail may separate from the nailbed. This can cause a lot of pain as well as bad odour.

This is categorized as a chronic pain and can spread to the other toenails through the skin that is present between the toes. It can also be spread when the nail files and clippers that were used on the infected nail are also used on the other nails.

A lack of personal hygiene, wearing socks and shoes for a long period of time, sharing of footwear with an infected person, walking barefeet in public pools or showers, not drying the feet after a shower as well as weak immune system are some of the main causes of toenail fungus.

This problem can actually be treated with the help of simple and easy home remedies. These remedies are known to control the infection and also prevent further damage to the toenail.

Apple cider vinegar has antimicrobial properties that help in killing the fungus that causes the infection. Its mild acidic nature also helps prevent the infection from spreading. Soak the infected feet in a solution of apple cider vinegar and water for half an hour every day to treat nail fungus.

Baking soda is alkaline in nature and this makes it an excellent natural home remedy for nail fungus. It can also prevent the fungus from growing and spreading. Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it on the infected part for 20 minutes a day.

It is known to have antiseptic properties that can kill the bacteria in the toenail. Clean the infected area with alcohol and apply a few drops of tea tree oil on it and do it every day for a month.

Oregano oil is known to have antiseptic as well as antifungal properties. Apply five drops of oregano oil on the affected area and leave it for about five-ten minutes every day and wash off.

It is known to contain an antifungal compound known as ajoene, which is very effective against toenail fungus. Crush a few garlic cloves and add them into a foot bath with lukewarm water. Soak your infected toe in it. Do this until you get rid of the toenail fungus completely.

It is known to have antiseptic properties that can treat this condition and prevent the infection from occurring again. Mix one spoon of turmeric powder with water and apply it on the affected toenail. Leave it for three-four hours, before you wash it off thoroughly.

Also known as neem, it has the ability to treat different kinds of toenail infections. Grind a handful of neem leaves and make a paste out of it. Add turmeric powder to it. Leave it for an hour and wash it off.

It has antifungal properties that can effectively kill the fungus responsible for this infection. Take some onion slices and gently rub them on the affected toenail for five minutes. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then wash it off.

Coconut oil is known to have medium-chain fatty acids and also works as a natural fungicide to effectively kill the fungus that causes this infection. Take some extra-virgin coconut oil and apply it on the affected area. Repeat this for two-three times a day. This is one of the natural home remedies to treat nail fungus.
