Conjunctivitis: Home Remedies For Quick Relief

Conjunctivitis is contagious. So, it is wise to get it treated fast. Here are some simple home remedies to try.

Conjunctivitis is nothing but eye infection. It is also known as pink eye as the eyes turn pink or red in colour. It is an infection of 'conjuctiva' which is a membrane that exists near the eye lid. When inflammation occurs in the blood vessels, the eye balls looks pink.

This condition occurs due to an allergic reaction which can either be viral or bacterial. Though this infection doesn't affect your vision, it could cause irritation.

As it is contagious, it is better to consult a doctor immediately to ensure that it doesn't spread to people around you. Symptoms include itching sensation in the eye, redness, tears and so on.
Here are some home remedies to try.

Turmeric

Turmeric

Mix 4 teaspoons of turmeric in a bowl of hot water. Dip a cotton cloth in it and squeeze it. Use it like a hot compress on the infected eye. Turmeric can reduce inflammation and also contains antibacterial agents.

Green Tea

Green Tea

Get a green tea bag and dip it in warm water. Put it on the eye that is infected. Matcha green tea contains bioflavonoids which reduce inflammation and irritation. They also fight viral and bacterial infections.

Neem Oil

Neem Oil

Before sleeping apply a drop of neem oil on the skin around your eye. It can reduce irritation and inflammation.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera Gel

Slightly smear a single drop of aloe vera gel around the infected eye. Aloe vera gel contains certain compounds like amodin and aloin which have antiviral and antibacterial properties. They can help in recovery and also reduce inflammation.

Basil (Tulsi)

Basil (Tulsi)

Boil a bowl of water. Soak a few leaves of basil in the hot water for 10 minutes. Dip a cotton cloth in the water and squeeze it.

Place the cloth on your eyes for 2 minutes. Repeat it 2-3 times. Also, wash your eyes with that water. Tulsi has anti-inflammatory agents, anti bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties in it. It can help in the healing process.

Once you have touched your infected eye, don't touch the other eye with the same hand as it may spread the infection. Wash your hands thoroughly.

If you have the habit of using contact lens, skip using them for a few days till the infection gets healed.
