Essential Oils That Help In Asthma & How To Use Them
Listed here are a few of the best essential oils that are useful in asthma. Check them out.
Asthma is a common health hazard seen in most people today irrespective of their age. Although mostly it's observed affecting the oldies. It leads to breathing inefficiency, and often doctors recommend using inhalers. But these inhalers contain a certain amount of steroid which can severely affect your body.
So, you can treat yourself or your near ones, who are suffering from asthma with essential oils. Asthma affects the airways of your lungs, and you develop coughing (persistently), chest pain, shortness of breath, tightness of muscles, etc.
Research suggests that asthma attacks more when a person is anxious. It can become severe and lead to mild heart attacks too. It is always recommended to keep a regular check on the health, diet and mental condition of asthma patients. Too much anger or excitement can be detrimental to their health.
During an asthma attack, the muscles near your lungs tighten, and it becomes difficult for you to breathe. Essential oils relax those muscles and prevent the formation of mucus. Read on to find out which essential oil will suit your particular need.
1. Lavender Oil:
Lavender has an enigmatic fragrance which most us enjoy. But you will be astounded to know that its oil is beneficial for an asthma patient. It helps reduce allergic bronchial inflammation. This oil immunes your body so that you can prevent any future asthma attack.
Also, it helps stimulate blood circulation, improves digestion and treats other respiratory problems like sinus congestion, laryngitis, etc. You can use it in two different ways.
In the first method, in a big bowl of hot water add 8-10 drops of lavender oil and inhale the steam covering your head with a towel. This will escalate airflow to your lungs and also offer you enough sleep.
Another way of treating asthma requires mixing five drops of lavender oil and an equal amount of eucalyptus oil in a mixing bowl. Using a cotton ball inhale the fragrance, and it will give you quick relief.
2. Clove Oil:
Clove is beneficiary for asthma patients. Its analgesic, anti-inflammatory and spasmodic property clears the blocked mucus and helps an asthma patient to breathe properly. There are two ways you can use it.
Firstly, in a small bowl mix 5-6 drops of clove oil and one tsp of almond oil. Then apply this on the patient's chest for nearly 5 minutes. The second way is, add ten drops of clove oil along with two tsp coconut/almond oil and the use an oil diffuser or vaporizer. The aroma will give relief to the patient.
3. Oregano Oil:
Bacterial and fungal infections are the primary reason for asthma, and oregano oil has that vital ingredient that helps to combat the disease. In an atomizer bottle add about 50 oz water and 25 drops of oregano oil. This will transform it into a spray, and you can inhale it.
Another way is to add the hot water and oil in a vaporizer and cover your head and inhale the steam. Both will benefit you in preventing further recurrence of asthma.
4. Eucalyptus Oil:
From our childhood, our biology books have reminded us of the essential benefits of the eucalyptus plant. Not surprisingly, its oil is equally beneficial to the asthma patients. The firm fragrance of the oil clears the blocked airways and nasal passage and lets you breathe normally. It also makes your body immune to any factors that can cause asthma.
Add 8-10 drops of eucalyptus oil in hot water and inhale the steam. Repeat the process twice or thrice a day, and it will work like a miracle for your asthma. However, those suffering from high blood pressure should avoid inhaling this oil.
5. Peppermint Oil:
In the list of essential oils, another name is peppermint oil. This oil has an antispasmodic quality that gives relief to an asthma patient. It is a useful oil for exercise and soothes the respiratory tract muscle, which otherwise tightens due to an asthma attack. Its aroma can clear stuffy nasal passage and cough too.
In a bowl add a few drops of peppermint oil and inhale it using cotton balls. This procedure will help you to prevent any further occurrence of an asthma attack.
6. Lemon Oil:
Lemon is full of vitamins and nutrients that are essential to our body. Lemon oil too helps in prevention of asthma and clears the airway to the lungs. Add a few drops of lemon oil in water and inhale it or use it as a spray to fight asthma and other respiratory problems.
7. Thyme Essential Oil:
Thyme is not only used for garnishing your healthy salads, but its oil contains antiseptic and antibacterial properties that unify it in treating asthma and its associated diseases like cold and cough.
However, thyme oil is not used alone. It is mixed with bergamot oil (10 drops of each) in hot water. Inhale the aroma from both the oil and eliminate the breathing difficulties caused by asthma. Also, you can directly mix both the oils and rub it on the patient's chest. The results will be the same.
