You might have heard that drinking plenty of water is good for your health, but have you heard that drinking plenty of water helps prevent UTI? Yes, a new study has found that drinking plenty of water everyday helps in warding off UTI.
Urinary tract infection or commonly known as UTI is one of the most common health problem faced by women.
But do you know why women are more prone to UTI then men? It is because women have a shorter urethra and this makes it easier for the bacteria to travel from the rectum and vagina to the bladder.
When you drink lots of fluids, it helps in flushing out the bacteria from the bladder and also reduces the concentration of bacteria that enters the bladder from the vagina. This in turn helps in preventing UTI.
140 healthy premenopausal women who had at least three UTIs in the last year and reported low daily fluid intake were taken into consideration for the study.
Among the group, half of the women (70) who served as the control group continued their usual daily fluid intake, while the rest were told to drink 1.5 liters of water a day in addition to their usual daily fluid intake.
After one year, women in the control group had 3.1 UTIs on average, whereas those in the water group had 1.6 UTIs on average, a 48 percent reduction.
During the study, researchers found that women who were at a risk of UTIs and who increased their water intake every day were nearly half as likely to get UTIs as women who did not.
