Quick Remedies For Tongue Ulcers


Our tongue is the most sensitive and strongest muscle in the body yet when you have mouth ulcers it can give you the most excruciating pain and discomfort. Tongue ulcers appear as raised round or small bumps with a white center bounded by red border.

Referred to as Canker Sores or Apthous stomatitis, tongue ulcers are caused by virus and these ulcers can appear at some point in our lives. This is a painful mouth lesion that usually takes 7 – 10 days to heal. So what causes these pesky tongue ulcers?

There is no particular cause for these painful spots. Yet the most common cause of triggers are food sensitivities and underlying disorders, biting your cheek/inside of your lip and intestinal or stomach disorders.

A lesion would develop due to various reasons and some of the causes of tongue ulcers include unhygienic dental conditions, deficiencies in vitamin B12 or Vitamin C, hormonal imbalance, genetic inheritance, lack of folic acid, using toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulfate and due to an injury from tongue biting or chewing.

The inflammation in the tongue is medically termed as Glossitis, while the pain is referred to as Glossodynia. Usually the inflammation may crop up either on the sides of the tongue or on the tip of the tongue. The swelling can even occur on the back of the tongue or throughout the tongue. Here are some of the remedies to treat tongue ulcers.



Firstly try to grate the coconut and make sure to extract its milk by squeezing it. Coconut milk is a natural and simple remedy to cure tongue ulcers. Extracted milk from grated coconut can be used for gargling. This is one of the treatments for tongue ulcers that should be done at least thrice in a day.


Baking soda

Take 1 tbsp of baking soda and 1 tsp of water and try to mix it thoroughly. This should be directly kept on the sores. Baking soda has the beneficial properties to reduce the number of bacteria in the tongue. You can even mix a spoon full of baking soda with lukewarm water and then rinse it off before going to bed.


Chamomile Tea

Chamomile is a herb that is used as a traditional medicine for many centuries. This has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which are used for treating tongue ulcers. Chamomile tea is said to be effective in soothing tongue blisters or bumps. It is important to drink the chamomile tea for 3 to 4 days in order to cure the canker sores.


Aloe Vera

The juice extracted from the Aloe Vera plant is the best home remedy to get rid of canker sores. All you need to do is wash the entire mouth with the juice of aloe vera.

Aloe Vera is an effectual remedy for tongue ulcers. It tries to appease the tongue naturally. Even wringing a fresh Aloe Vera leaf and applying its glutinous juice directly on canker sores can give better relief from the ugly pain.


Turmeric and honey

Canker sores are painful lesions in the mouth that is an indication of imbalances in your body. So try to make a turmeric paste using water and then apply it on the tongue sores. You can also try another remedy - take one tsp of honey and then add 1/4 tsp of turmeric into the bowl. Mix the ingredient and make it into a paste. Make sure to apply the ingredient on the affected area of the tongue using a clean cotton swab.


Clove oil

The numbing agent in clove can give perfect relief to painful tongue ulcers. Clove has the ability to numb the oral pain and is an effective canker sore remedy. Take 1/2 tsp of olive oil and then add 5 drops of clove oil. Mix both the oils in a bowl and then soak a cotton ball in the mixture. Make sure to directly apply it on the canker sore for approximately 10 minutes as this gives a nice numbing relief


Neem leaves

Even the medicinal leaves of the neem tree are one of the good remedies for tongue ulcers or canker sores. Boil the leaves in water for 30 minutes and then strain the liquid. Use the neem water for rinsing the mouth before and after a meal. Even chewing the leaves regularly can help in getting rid of canker sores.



Gargling with plum juice is good to get relief from painful tongue ulcers. Try to dip a cotton ball in plum juice and make sure to apply it over the bumps located in the tongue.

Even consuming plenty of vegetables and fruits with high content of vitamin B (green leafy vegetables, wheat grains and citrus fruits) is effective for treating tongue ulcers.
