Home Remedies To Cure Ear Pain

Ear pain is a common medical condition that can affect both children as well as adults. Excessive ear pain can lead to difficulty in hearing, which in turn can create a problem in living a healthy life.

Ear pain/earache can be caused by a number of factors like short-term/long-term ear infection, arthritis of the jaw, buildup of ear wax or an object stuck in the ear, pressure change – induced ear injury (from high altitudes and other causes), hole in the eardrum, sore throat and sinus infection.

Well, what is important in such a situation is to identify the symptoms as early as possible and select a proper home remedy or consult a doctor, depending on the severity.

The most common symptoms include pain in the external ear canal, an itchy ear, ringing/buzzing sound in the ear, swollen ear, blocked ear, pain in the ear, fluid discharge from the ear.

Other commonly found symptoms also include fever, loss of appetite, irritability (especially in small children), vertigo and dizziness and severe pain, especially while lying down.

Basil leaves, containing beta-carotene, vitamin C, eugenol, borneol, etc, has amazing antibacterial and antiseptic properties which are beneficial in the treatment of ear pain. Apply 2 drops of the juice extract from basil leaves inside the ear to treat the pain.

Garlic contains rich antioxidants and has antibacterial properties too, which help in treating earache. Mash boiled cloves of garlic (3-4) in some water and add a pinch of salt. Wrap this in a flannel or woolen cloth and place it on the aching ear.

Mustard oil is also said to have antibacterial properties and can reduce the severity of ear pain. Put warm mustard oil (2-3 drops) into the infected ear and allow it to remain there.

To reduce ear pain and soothe your ears, soak a clean towel in warm water and compress it near the infected ear for about 20 minutes.

Add several drops of eucalyptus oil and a teaspoon of Vicks into a bowl of boiling water. Inhale the steam through your nose till the pain dies down, as this will ease the pressure and help to drain the fluids from the ear.

Dip a cotton ball in onion juice extract and press it against the ear. It reduces the inflamed lining and eliminates the bacterial activity that causes pain, redness and itching.

Include foods in your diet that are rich in vitamin C and zinc such as lemons, oranges, guavas, strawberries, papayas, cashew nuts and wheat germs to reduce the earache.
