Causes And Treatment Of Achilles Tendon Rupture
The largest and the strongest tendon in the human body is the Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon enables us to raise our heels as we walk. It helps us to lift the rear of our heels and to push up the toes.
This tendon can rupture and become inflamed. When too much force is exerted on the tendon, it can rupture. This rupture leads to inflammation and an intense pain at the back of the leg. Sometimes the tendon can also tear partially. If good care is not taken to treat it, then it can lead to a full rupture.
This rupture can result because of poor conditioning, advanced age, steroid injections, weak calf muscles, certain antibiotics, poorly fitted shoes, jogging or running on hard surfaces and too much of exertion during exercise.

The immediate treatment for the pain is to apply ice. The application of ice will help in reducing the swelling and the pain. Apply ice as quickly as possible after the harm has been done. Wrap up the ice in a towel and apply it to the affected area.
An orthopaedic surgeon should be consulted to treat the Achilles tendon rupture. Achilles tendon is diagnosed with the help of X-rays, ultrasound and sometimes even MRIs when it is not properly visible on the ultrasound.

Surgery is recommended in cases where there is a complete tear. If there is a partial tear, it can be treated with nonsurgical means. The treatment should be determined based on the age of the patient, the level of activity that the patient goes through every day and other risk factors like diabetes, heart trouble, ulcers in the surrounding areas, etc.
However, care should be taken so that the injury does not happen again. For this, one should exercise caution regarding certain things. One should wear proper shoes and avoid stressing the heels. Avoid any activity that puts a lot of stress on the heels. Always warm up before doing any exercise. Choose an exercise that does not strain the Achilles tendon.
